Well as the dust settles and things start to get back to normal, I've been hearing a lot of reports of trees coming down and causing property damage.
My friend had a tree in his yard which got felled by the wind (not uprooted but cracked in half no less!) which poleaxed his deck and would have done some serious damage to his house if it had been slightly nearer.
Most alarming though, was when I looked out of a side window at home, and discovered that a neighbor's tree had been blown over and destroyed a shed/garage type structure in his back yard.
That tree was only 20' or so away from a large tree in our back yard that is poised directly over the roof of our bedroom.
I'm pretty sure it was just pot luck that we didn't have our roof caved in.
My wife thought I was overdoing it a bit by insisting we go to the drugstore, but when she saw that felled tree, she realised tgat I'm not so paranoid after all.
I'd much prefer to look a little foolish than run the risk of the unthinkable happening to my family, but it turns out that I actually look rather heroic anyway
This whole thing has really tipped me over the edge. When I use my peanut now, it feels like a real piece of equipment.
I never considered it a 'toy' or a novelty before, but it's so true that all you really need for 99% of cutting tasks is an inch or two of razor sharp steel.
When I was using it before to open packages, cut food etc, I was always doing it partly for the knife nut pleasure of using it.
It's nice to know that when I had a million things to think about, and knife geekery was the last thing on my mind, that little blade really did turn out to be the most practical tool for the job.
I'm going to stop typing now, before I sound like I'm selling these things
