Our oldest Quaker parrot named Peanut passed on last wednesday after going thru a long illness that there wasnt much of anything to do for, except to help him as much as we could and keep him as happy and comfortable as possible. Sometime after we got him he developed plucking syndrome which got progressively worse despite all our efforts, we believe it was a major contributor to his untimely death, he was approximately 26 years old.

The wife and i had gone to the craft shop to find a suitable box for a casket on tuesday, as she had the feeling that he wasnt going to be with us much longer. Wednesday morning i fashioned the jewelry box we found into its planned use and made him a nice little resting place. When i went to take a little siesta in the evening peanut was eating and having a drink and seemed to be doing alright. When i awoke the wife was crying, holding him and told me he passed on about a 1/2 hour earlier. Right now we are a little concerned for his mate Cara Mia, who misses him probably more than us, as she helped us care for him for so long.

He was a sweet little bird, full of love and kisses and fun.
As the oldest member of our brood he will be sorely missed and remembered fondly. May he rest in peace. I just wanted to share with you all a wonderful bird and friend, so that he may be wished godspeed and some smoke for his safe passage.

Smoke up for a wonderful little bird. Smoke up for his mate, too:(

Whether feathered, furred, or scaled when such unique beings pass our hearts hurt with the emptiness their going brings to those who love them.

Smoke, thoughts and prayers for Peanut and your loss.

it's hard to lose a friend, my condolence's to you and all the rest of peanut's flock.

Very sorry Karda. :( I once got a Nanday Conure for my little brother that died the same way. I remember his helpless frustration trying to care for it, and the same heartbreak when it passed.

Prayers for peace and comfort for you, your wife and Kara Mia. :)

Thank you ,guys!!

Were alright with his passing as it was somewhat expected, just a bit bummed out and feeling the hole he has left in our flock. I sure do miss the sweet little guy but I'm glad he is now in Critter heaven feeling as right as rain, with his feathers grown back and playing with his favorite toys and kissing everybody.

Poor little feller... He looked like he spent alot of time outside his cage. Good

I am starting to believe less and less in the established religions and lean more towards the shamanistic beliefs of our ancient ancestors.

Hard to lose a Family member...
We hope our Lil cinnamon Green-Cheek Conure, Maya makes it to a Ripe Ol age...sounds like You had a Long and Full Life with Your Lil Guy!!

Hey Karda,
Sorry I didn't see this before now.
We are sad to hear of your loss. I know the feeling of that space a loss makes. Smoke for a feathered friend.

Poor Peanut.

Given what I've heard about the lifespan of parrots, no owner should have to outlive their pet. :(

These Quakers lifespans are roughly 40 years, maybe slightly longer, given optimal circumstances with no complications. Pea had been thru several owners before us which is the reason we believe he developed plucking syndrome despite being well cared for and loved. All parrots develop a family bond with their owners and can really get disturbed if this is disrupted for them, especially multiple times. That is why when we sell or place a bird we explain this to prospective owners and do our utmost to ensure that they go to caring , loving homes that will keep them for life as if they were their own children.

My African Grey Congo, named Ren, Had been kept in a Kitchen cupboard by his previous owner and likely spent a good part of his adolescence there. He was also traded in to the store i worked at. when i met him he had bonded with the owner of the store, who broke the bond, Ren had also semi bonded with one of our customers. I decided Ren needed peace of mind and bonded with him, and started a payment plan with the owner.
The owner, I and my wife used to brownbag our lunches and store them on the covered shelf below the bird playground.... Ren would sneak down on that shelf and shred the owners lunch all over the floor while leaving ours intact. Before i had completely paid the bill for Ren, he bit thru the index fingernail of the pet store owner and i got to take him home that day at a discount.
Ren has a vocabulary of almost 2000 words and his favorite word for me is either " Bud " or "A$$hole" depending on his mood. African greys have the mental capacity of a human 5 to 7 yr old and a lifespan from 65 to 80 years, so i fully expect that i will be leaving him to my son in my will as he is too ornery, opinionated and funny to pass on before me. He is not my "Pet" but a treasured friend, one of only a few that i would allow to sponge off of me their entire lives and still Sh#t on me.

Here is some of our Flock. Besides these guys we have a small colony of finches a canary and a pair of breeding Cockateils. The rest of our menagerie consists of four dogs, 3 cats ,a red tailed boa and his rat colony for food and a pair of anoles who took over the home of our millepede when he died.
I used to have a least 5 fresh and saltwater fistanks running at any given time, but dont really have room here now.

Haha, priceless! That Ren sounds like a character. Oh, to be a "pet" in a good home... that's the life!

Yeah, he sure is a character....and he knows which one too!
His Favorite (and all our birds) is Spongebob Squarepants. He insists that everybodys name ends with "Bob". he and Beau whistle the ending part of the spongebob theme all the time. Ren also whistles the complete Andy Griffith theme (he knew it when i got him) and he and Beau both know the major parts of "Pop goes the weasel", "Popeye", Einer kleiner Nacht Muzik by Mozart and a few others.

Ren enjoys perplexing us humans.
When i first met Ren at the pet store, which was on the second floor or our old Local Newberries Dept store. I had to go downsatairs to get some change for the cash register. as i passed under the landing Ren was watching my every move and i was staring up at him and stopped to give him the eye for a second. He looks sideways at me and says "What the hell ya lookin' at "

He also was sitting on this same landing one day, trying to crack a large Pecan. He couldnt open that nut as hard as he tried and was fairly mad at it. Just then the Newberries store manager passed under the landing and ended up getting that pecan dropped squarely on the top of her head. We were told not to let him sit over there anymore.

One day at the pet store an elderly lady walked over to Ren on the parrot playground and told him "Oh, Youre such a pretty, pretty Bird!" and Ren looked down at her and said in a disgusted voice " well....Youre an A-- hole".
The poor lady took off down the stairs with the exclaimation of "well i never!"

As long as i've had him he still manages to amaze me sometimes.
Just the other day, the wife and i were having a heated debate over some nonsense and she told me i better calm my butt down....from his cage you hear Ren tell me "yeah you better, or i'm gonna kick your A--"!, the wife and i just sat there and busted up. So did Ren with his evil little laugh.

One morning Fedex came way earlier than usual to deliver a package and the wife and i had decided to sleep in and had just woke up. As it was going to rain, we left a note for the guy to slide the package just inside the porch door.
When he did so, Ren noticed what he was doing and yelled " What are you doin" A--hole!" from his cage. The puzzled delivery guy uttered "Oh, i'm Sorry" and quickly closed the door and took right off. After we were done laughing and wiping the tears from our eyes the wife had to call Fedex to explain what happened.

I have countless other stories of this birds mischeif and the rotten thing is that he tries to teach any bird that will listen to him his evil ways. All of our birds, except the Cockateils the canary and finches speak human language. The Quakers sound like munchkins, Beau is too introverted to speak very much but has a vocabulary at least half as big as Ren.

As michievious as he is though ,hes a big old softie. He likes me to give him a kiss and a hug at bedtime and most of the time lets me give him some pets like a dog or cat. It took me years to get him to do that after his former owners treatment. When i first got him he would bite pretty badly. I used to have sores on my fingers and got bit in the face several times during our first few years together.

In my next life i want to become a pet in a home such as ours, where i will be well cared for and loved and can just live my life without all the BS that us humans have brought on ourselves.

Count me in on that too please?
