I now have the guard and handle mocked up and it's looking good. as you can tell it is a d guard bowie and the guard is forged from wrought iron that started as round stock, handle is cocobolo wood. going back to the shop to continue the battle. This is my first D guard bowie so it's a learning process as i go. here are the pictures.

His nose cause he wasn't giving "BubbaDoll" enough attention.... she smacked him upside the head with it :D

Looking good.

you all should know I etch all my hand forged blades in human blood, that's just a little left over that i forgot to remove ;). It's actually dykem, it's a layout fluid. I use it to fit the guard to the tang. I paint it on the tang and slide the guard on and it tells me where the guard is rubbing on the tang. Now since it is wrought iron should i etch it or just leave it shiny. i will post some pictures later.

Well if you're etching in YOUR blood I'd say it probably needs a deep deep etch. :p

Not sure, I have some wrought I haven't used yet.

Since you have to make it shiny anyway, see how you like it, but my vote is for a light etch.

OK it is to the point where i think you can see another picture. i decided not to do a etch on it. I have two kinds of wrought, one with a very course slag pattern which is very nice to etch and another with a very very fine slag pattern. I used the fine pattern wrought so when it is etched it does not really show much. I am going to put my name on it, but it is already heat treated so my stamp wont work. i had stamped it before heat treating but i used an oven to heat treat it in but i forgot to foil wrap it so i got a lot of scale and when i ground of the scale the stamp came with it. so i am going to mill in my name with a cnc mill at work. The knife is very close to being done, just some clean up and hand sanding on the handle and guard. then glue it up and pean the tang over the butt. here are the new photos. it's just mocked up right now so there is a little gap where the blade meets the guard. but no worries it will be gone. once it is glued and peened i will finish shaping the back of the guard/handle.
