I have several sets of very pretty stag scales with very deep and closely spaced crevices. No matter how I move scales right and left..I end up with crevices that will contain a pin. Normally I can pein one side of pin, set it in hole, and pein the other side. Not this time. I have tried to make a hollow staking tool to rest the knife on a pin and inevitably it jumps off the tool and scars the stag. Any hints here? Thanks.

you need a punch with a dimple to keep it from slipping off. are you relying on pins only to hold the scales on? i myself would only use pins for looks and maybe to help keep them from shearing off from any sideways force. when i put wood scales on i dont peen my pins and rely on a good epoxy to hold them on.

IMHO pins are the way to go with any material, like stag, that's going to move. I just did a little dagger with ivory scales and the only thing holding them on is 1/16" pins. I would try tapering the hole and swelling the pin as best you can and then remove the excess with a dremel tool. The punch with a recess in it sounds like a good idea as well.
