Pelican 1020 question

I just received a Pelican 1020 hard case today. I am a little dissapointed in the lack of space inside mainly due to the rubber insert. My first thought was to remove it, but in doing so, I also remove its water proof capabilities since the insert is the gasket too. Has anyone cut the insert out leaving enough to keep the gasket part? I was wondering if this would kill its water proofness. I don't beleive it will, but you never know. Thanks.

You "can" trim the gasket and retain the waterproofness....but leave about a 3/4" of the rubber on the sidewalls of the case. Use a scalper or razor blade.

I dont know why Pelican went with these inserts, they do take up a lot of room. I prefer the tried tested and true o ring seal like on the larger cases.
