Pen blades- am I the only one??

I'm a pen blades guy all the way and use them almost as much as the main blade. Those little blades are sharp and can get in all kinds of places that others can't. If it does not have a pen, I may not buy it.

I want this blade to have a good point. So the curve of a spey blade does not work, and a small sheepsfoot squared edge is good but does not have a point.

Neeman, this is an interesting pattern from Rough Rider, which has a secondary Wharncliffe, so pointier than a sheepfoot.

Also, the main blade locks, and unlocks by depressing the closed Wharncliffe blade, kind of a "secret" mechanism. I use this one a lot as it resides in my travel kit bag.

I really like a pen blade, one of my favorite knives is a Case XX M279F.
This one does not have the file, but still a great knife

I was brought up taught to keep the pen blade razor sharp for tasks which required that. However, I find the most use for my small second blades keeping them fairly blunt for scraping, deburring metal, etc..

I would love the find a Barlow with a pen blade of file steel.

I have been carrying the same Peanut for almost a year now. I can honestly say that I've only used the pen blade a couple of times. I've just never seen a use for it. But since the almost everyone seems to support the pen blade, i'm going to use it exclusively for the next couple of days to see what conclusion I reach...

Probably on a very small pattern like a Peanut, the pen blade would be a bit redundant, not enough handle.

On larger Jacks I'm very keen on the pen blade, a good and faithful servant

I recently found a particular penchant for pen blades. I have a few in mind that I'd like to get. They make perfect sense on something like the GEC dogleg jack or the QCCC teardrop jack, and the Queen straight jack. Something more broadly robust and capable coupled with the ideal apple corer and general fiddler. Can't be beat

Got my eye on a Queen or Northwoods gunstock jack at the moment. Looking forward to finding some loot to get it with too :lol:

I use the pen blade on my Case SBJ quite a bit. The handle size on the SBJ seems to work well.

I don't use the pen much. When I was carrying the SBJ a lot I would use it for tasks that would be more prone to instantly dulling the edge. Also used the pen on my SAK Hiker a lot when whittling my ball in cage, for some reason I liked it more than the SBJ pen blade for that task.

I use my pen blades very often. I like that bladeshape. But, if the pen is too small, I use it hardly. On my peanut I don´t use the pen, or when than very seldom. But on the Case Medium Stockman I like the pen blade as a last-resort-blade on that knife. So I keep it always razorsharp.
On any SAK are always penblades. Here in Germany, this is THE blade for a pocketknife. (I have to add: Most people here around just know SAK knives )

Agreed. On the SBJ, the pen blade doesn't seem so much secondary (or even tertiary) as much as simply "the other blade"-- and a sturdy one, at that.

I really appreciate that its nail nick is on the opposite side of the wharncliffe's, rendering it equally as accessible. I like this pattern very much.

I use my pen blades pretty much just for sharpening pencils. There's one on my Case Tiny Stockman, and it's the most difficult blade to open on that knife (which is way too small for a stockman, if you ask me). I don't use the one on my Vic Super Tinker for anything, and would rather have the awl that my Farmer has than a pen blade. I've been looking a a Peanut for a long time now, and would probably just use the pen blade on that as a pencil sharpener too.

I like it for dirty work, scraping sharpening pencils cutting cardboard, zip ties, heavy plastics, so to me they are pretty useful, but I think a sheeps foot of the same size is better at several of these things. But also the pen blade gives you outstanding control of the blade.

I've no use for them either.

I generally carry single blade knives but I carry a multi blade knife, it's a camper. I put scissors and screw driver cap lifter way way way out ahead of a second pen blade in terms of utility. IMO, that was the brilliance of last years forum knife.

If I was doing a lot of wood working, the pen would make sense to me.

I've been carrying a Peanut for about a month now and retract what I said about just sharpening pencils. The main blade is fairly thin towards the tip so I've been using the pen blade on tougher stuff like plastics. I've gotten to like it. Makes the Case stockmen with pen blades and the Texas Jack a lot more appealing to me.

I like pen blades for opening boxes...easy to use the thumb as a guide and controle depth of cut, and it's so small not much tape residue to clean off...

Ironically on knives that have pen blades they seem to get sharper for me then the main blade idk if it's the way I hold the blade when sharpening but heres a peek:
