Penetrator Tip?

Hello, all.

I tried searching the threads for information on the "penetrator tip" that are on some Busse knives... but I'm really not finding any explanation to what it is and what it looks like.

Can anyone help me out?

On Game Wardens, it was it was a slight sharpening of the top of the blade at the point on some of the really thick ones.

I don't have any good pictures of my own, but Ken Lunde's wallpaper pages have some really good ones.

You can see a Game Warden with the regular tip here.
And the penetrator tip here.

I believe it is a grind variation where the blade tip is left thicker and given a swedge so that it will penetrate more easily and be less prone to damage when stabbing, I don't know if there is a specific standard for it or not

Check out the post I made in the sharpening thread just a bit ago, HERE. I did those myself, but it gives you an idea of what they might look like on a bigger blade too.

I've got a skinny ash with one. Didn't even know it was there until looking through this thread with it in hand just now.

This new development changes everything.

I like the traditional penetrator tip... the yoroi toshi.
Actually, when done correctly, any knife point can pierce.

A few better ones of my version of the Busse penetrator tip than what I linked previously. I draw the bevels back a bit further than Busse does.

FWIW, to make mine, I use a 10" diameter grooved diamond grinding wheel normally used for making the ridge around the rim of eyeglass lenses. Perfect results every time!

Could you take a picture if that grinding wheel? I don't understand how you use that, since I assume you aren't grooving the bevels?

Can't get to it right now, sorry. If you'd have posted an hour or so ago, I could have. Picture what would happen if you took the point of a diamond and gouged it into a bench grinder wheel as it was running. You'd get a v-shaped groove in the perimeter of the wheel. That's basically what this wheel looks like. I'll try and snap a pic tomorrow.

Oh so you run the spine of the blade in the groove, with the blade parallel to the wheel? I imagine that would work well to help keeping the two sides even...

Exactly. Just the very tip of the blade though. And very carefully, because that edge is staring you right in the face. I'll start about 3/4" up the blade, and carefully move toward the tip, with the direction of travel of the wheel going away from the tip. I wet the diamond wheel down when I do this, because it is easy to overheat the point of the knife where the heat collects when doing this.
