Penetrator Tip?

I recently purchased a slightly used Camp Tramp that is in very good condition.
Before sending to Eric for a sharpening, I was curious: can a penetrator tip be added as it originally did not have one? It currently has the black coating which I want to keep, will it look natural if the penetrator tip is able to be added?
Thanks!

Congratulations on your Camp Tramp. I am sure you are going to love it and live unforgettable moments with it. Regarding the issue of sending it to Eric for sharpening, I think that, to the best of my knowledge, sharpening can only be done by the factory and those two (i.e. Eric and the Wauseon factory) are located rather far from one another. As for adding a Penetrator Tip, I believe it can be done now and I don't see any reason for which this addition should have a negative effect in any way on your knife. As a matter of fact I think it will make it look better plus you get the benefit of added penetration; and to answer your question yes it will look natural. I have three hardened through Battle Rats and a SAR and they all have the P.T. It suits them fine!

The penetrator tip is done at sharpening, after the coating has been done.
Thus, all penetrator tips are sans coating.
So,having it added won't change the way it would look if it came from the swamp originally with it.
Hope this is of some help.

I just bought a never used mint condition through hardened battle rat Black blade/ tan handle on the secondary market. No penetrator tip. I am very happy with the knife except I wished the tip was sharper. I am terrible at sharpening and dont want to ruin the knife so I am also interested in finding out about a penetrator tip. Could any of you good folks tell me how much it cost and the best process to aquire it  Thanks all J

Congratulations on the acquisition of your hardened through Battle Rat:thumbup:. I am sure you are going to be satisfied with it. The Penetrator Tip is a formation of the tip that aids in penetration. It doesn't aid in sharpness of the tip. If you would like to make the edge at the tip of your knife sharper, I would propose that you use water proof sandpaper. I have used water proof sandpaper at 180 grit on a large HI WWII khukuri that I have and I have been able to make it absolutely razor sharp! I had read quite a few articles about the use of water proof sandpaper in sharpening and I thought of giving it a try. I decided to try it on this khukuri and I couldn't have been happier with the results!
Of course, I think that another option would be to send it back to the factory requesting that it is sharpened and also request the addition of the Penetrator Tip. I believe that you will only have to pay for postage and insurance but I maybe wrong here so, I suggest you double check that.

I hope this helps.

I was starting to think my post was going to have no replies!!:o Thanks again J

Nice edge:thumbup:! Did you apply two different bevels? The line that appears could have been the hamon but it is too close to the edge. So, what is the case?

Yes..
Infact there are a number of bevels, but they are smoothened out to a convex edge. The line shows the last one.. I kinda liked the transition..

Thanks.

I think it may be worth the investment for the lansky. I have a spyderco sharpmaker but have even screwed up with that!! I think I am sharpening challenged!! I am afraid to mess up my good knives!! Maybe I should do some practicing on some cheap knives. I wish there were classes on sharpening for guys like me!!:o Lol. Thanks all, J

Speaking theoretically, wouldn't a penetrator tip weaken the knife and make the tip more prone to breaking off?

The Dumpster Mutts from Scrapyard have a P tip and I really doubt the tip is going to be damaged. I love my Lansky and use it constantly. I should have got the diamond one though.

The Penetrator Tip is actually a relief of some metal from the tip. I still believe that it will take amazing force to damage it vs. a non - Penetrator Tip but otherwise similar knife. Lengthwise is short so it is still a very strong formation.
