People are weird about knives - or maybe just weird

Same with snakes. Various rat snakes, king snakes, and bull snakes are favorites, I'm quite fond of the larger N. American constrictors! I don't play with rattlesnakes, or any other venomous types
Different circumstances require different responses. The common brown snake is the most, well, common snake where I live. It is also the 2nd most deadly snake in the world.
but I don't kill them, even on my own property. They were here long before I was, and will be here long after I am gone.
I've had brown snakes in my back yard, and have called the fire department to remove them (the recommended action, here in suburban Sydney). They're protected and it isn't legal to kill them - not that I want to. But I also want them gone if they're too close to the house.

...Mike

I can understand and respect that. Just as I understand and respect the wildlife. Not going to compare myself to Steve Irwin, but I have been around creepy-crawlers of all sorts my whole life. Not so many dangerous critters in my part of the world, but understanding them is the key to respect. And personal safety!

ETA: in keeping with the original intent of this thread, the same goes for knives. Understanding and respect...

People are just retarded. Today I took my wife to the movies and her sandal broke. I was only able to temporarily fix it thanks to the fact that I had my pocket knife with me. Otherwise she would have walked barefoot home.

.….Not sure about places that sell wine allowing you to bring in your own. Selling wine is a huge profit generator for restaurants.

I used to frequently bring my own wine bottles to restaurants. I would just ask in advance if they would allow it and agreed on a corking fee.

When Great Grandfather hired farmhands, he looked at their pocket knife.
Knife cared for and had sharp blades? He was responsible, and trustworthy. (If qualified, he got the job)
Broken Blade? He was careless and prone to use the wrong tool for the task at hand. (Did not get hired)
Dull blade(s) He was lazy. (Did not get hired)
No knife? At best he was just forgetful.
At worst, he was untrustworthy, careless, lazy, and worthless.
(Did not get hired regardless of qualifications.):)
That is truly awesome! I'm going to start asking potential new hires that in the interview process.

Well, I learned something new. Someone has actually needed and used the corkscrew on a SAK. I still say phillips.

The earth people have been mighty concerned about my pocket knife since I was a little kid. I even carry a small pen knife just so that I don't scare them with something so ghastly as my Buck 112. And if it makes a loud click when it opens, you can hear their bums pucker. I just don't care anymore.

Way back in my youth, when I both drank wine and carried a SAK I would use the cork screw fairly often, in some non residential location.

Foks who don't own a folding knife of any sort
just haven't discovered the joy of having play host
to a bunch of ill informed contemptuous hypocrites;
Whose every disrespect for the knife and its owner
only reflects a personality of sheeplike dependance
unworty of any future positive impressionable knife moments.
Next time around, get everyone to sign an imdemnity form
before pulling out a knife....
Imho, knife people should be fully aware that
the wider population thinks its kinda weird to be
carrying any sorta knife within city limits.
Be aware that any public "knife displays"
would always be deeply scrutinized and your personality questioned.
Never be tempted to get ultra knife helpful when other options still exist,
Well, not unless an extrodinary situation calls for your dutiful exposure,
consequences be d@mned.

I try not to take my knife out too much around people.

The sad thing is that “polite society” will view us as “that weird guy who carries a knife”. Even if its a very small knife, its too late, those who know me have already seen me with the dreaded 3.5 inch folder of mass destruction enough times that I might as well be walking around with a SCUD missile tipped with nerve agent.

Of course when they need a knife or need a knife task done and I do it for them. They stare wided eyed and amazed like what I just achieved was akin to discovering penicillin or a cure for cancer.

That doesn’t change the fact that it is only in that brief moment they appreciate having the knife around. Most are conditioned to view a blade as dangerous and a weapon. Public seems to want to take away the role of each man protecting themselves and their family especially in Canada (europe, NYC, LA) to the point where they would prefer for everyone to be a eunuch.

Many years ago, I was at a salad bar in a pizza place, and a cop walked up to me and said I would have to remove my knife from my belt, and put it out in the car.(I had no car, and had walked there) I asked him why, and he told me it was illegal. I told him it was a single edged blade, less than six inches in length, was not concealed, and was legal for me to carry anywhere. He asked me how I knew this, and I told him that I had called downtown to check the law, and that perhaps he should do the same. He got a little testy, and told me I should still take it off because it made other people nervous. I said that was THEIR problem, not mine, and that maybe they should stay at home. He just looked at me as I carried my salad back to my table to finish my dinner, but never said another word.

I don't understand, and have little sympathy, for people who are scared of inanimate objects. Of course, I don't understand adult males who scream like an eight year old girl when they see a spider, either...

The inanimate object only compounds their fear. What they really are afraid of is other people.

That’s just how society is today.

Oh, I know THAT!!! It's not the knife you're fighting, but rather the man holding the knife.

Reading the OP I thought for sure this would be some Bay Area or east coast city. Australia, where everything wants to kill you? And you’re carrying a scary SAK? I think maybe you just need new friends.

Who tests a knife edge on themselves? wow... By that logic given a gun this guy would look down the barrel and pull the trigger, LOL!

I have used my knifes countless times in every public venue imaginable and people have glanced but nobody has ever said a single word to me about it.

Apparently, not everybody carries a knife in Australia, especially in the big cities(?). Probably not much different from many (most?) other countries.

I'm not surprised. Japan is known to have had a rich historical knife culture, but now has very restrictive knife laws, especially in the cities.

A person must be weird to conclude that a SAK is a dangerous weapon. Could you imagine pulling a SAK on a person in self defense? First I’d have to fish it out of my pocket. Then I would have to ask the deranged individual to wait while I found and opened the correct blade. I’d probably pull the saw out accidentally. Then I’d have to pray that it did not close on my hand. Come on man!

I've EDC'd a SAK for the last 6 years and a copper walked past me while I was stood on the pavement outside my parents house, slicing open compost bags and pouring them into big plant pots, he just said hello and carried on walking.

I do live in care and stay away from home for weeks at a time, I used the corkscrew on my Huntsman twice in the last month uncorking wine for a 94 year old man I've been caring for.

At parties I have had a couple of people say it's illegal to carry and I just quoted the law at them, not more than 3 inch blade, non locking and doesn't require a "reason" to carry. But it could be used as a weapon some replied, I just told them that a chair leg could be used as a more effective weapon and you don't have an irrational fear of those do you?

The most effective tool on a SAK for a weapon is the awl and corkscrew, just punch out someones eyes with it.

When people are actually really afraid , they don't berate and shame . They freeze , cower , hide , run away (or physically attack ). These "anti-weapon" people are on a mission motivated by ignorance and an ideology of harmlessness . They're not afraid , they are self-righteously PO'd .
