Looks like the outskirts of a major city in almost every developing nation I have visited. Sad but true.

Can't agree more.

I think we get a wakeup call though when we actually see things personally. We tend to block out TV, internet, and radio to some degree, but seeing and experiencing things in person makes it more "real".

I went to the hard Rock here on Sunday (yeah I know why eat western food in India... But I collect the t-shirts). On the way back I took a tuk-tuk or motor rickshaw (different names in different cities), and after the approx 2 mile ride, the meter said... get this... 24 rupees...

The exchange rate is 47 rupees to the dollar, so that is almost nothing...

I gave the driver 200 rupees (less than $5, which gets me maybe 10 blocks in NYC), and he could not have been happier. He now makes sure he is waitng for me in the morning to get me to the office, and asks when I want him to pick me up, and he is there waiting for me. I realize he is doing this for the money, but it really shows how fortunate we are, especially when you look at the average cost of one of our Busse "fixes"... Or a latte at Starbucks. Or even a Dunkin Donuts coffee.

I actually had to "raid" homes that were made of mud filled cans as walls of "suspected" terrorist..........you can't help but feel a bit bad kicking in their walls and finding a family of 8 living in an area about 10x10.

People in this country have NO idea of what true poverty is..........
