People often joke about sharpening a knife down to nothing... has anyone done that?

mtnbkr - that's great! It looks like it would make short work of a roasted hog. I bet it's made out of some good ole carbon steel and takes a good edge. I have a knife my grandfather made for me out of a file before he passed away. It takes a wicked edge and still works fine. It is one of my prized posessions.

I used to look upon that knife with such awe when I was little and my dad would let me hold it. I still do, in a way. I have it on display and proudly tell everyone about it when they ask about it.

As for sharpening down a knife into nothing, I have seen that lots of times. Almost every older gent who carries a knife has at LEAST one that's been sharpened down to a toothpick. I'm not old at all and I have a couple of slipjoints like that! I have a friend who has carried a serrated Spydie Police for years. It looks way more plain edged than serrated now. It has been sharpened down pretty far, but he still carries it becase he says it still works for him... can't argue with that.
