People who don't get it

Well bud we've all been there a time or two. It all goes the same way, though. You have a hobby that no one else has an interest in; and therefore they have determined that you should be spending your money elsewhere. Next time, ask if maybe you should start a nice amphetamine addiction instead?

I jest.

I'll tell you the way that I was able to distance myself from shoulder looking and homelife negativity; I left. I moved out of my parents house and into a place with a friend of mine who was looking to do the same thing. When I left, I made it absolutely clear that I wasn't going to be expecting or taking any financial assistance from my family now that I was "doing it on my own".

A sense of pride comes along with that, a sense of ownership in yourself. Now you don't have to be ALL anti family and close the door forever! Sure, go meet them for dinner some night, but pay your share, or one night pay for the whole bill. Your parents did it for long enough, once cant hurt. Sooner or later they will see you're working at making yourself a responsible person, and if a wicked solid knife hobby is what grounds you, then so bit it.

This may not be a popular response but if you live at home and you aren't self sufficient your parents have every right to criticize on how you spend your money. If you think I'm being mean or unreasonable just wait 10 years and I'd bet you'd agree with me.

"people who don't get it" is the title of you threat.
Try to convince them. Find arguments that make them understand.
Quality has many aspects, material, form, finish.
I like the comparison between knives, show them the different kind of finishes.
You could also use equitations (cars, shoes, clothing, TV-sets..)
As for you current family situation, if you have a reasonable amount of money at your disposal (i.e.: from working, b-day money, you name it) then you should have the right to spend it as you like (within legal limits;)).
That's a part of growing up.
all the best

I can understand your parent's concerns and issues with buying many knives. I suspect the dominant concern your parents have is that they see that you have limited resources and they don't see a need for more than a couple knives for using. It is a matter of priorites and they see your priorities pointed toward "acquiring things" with redundant uses. They will always be your parents. Be glad that you have parents that care.

I feel that a lot of people took this the wrong way.. Although many of the comments are helpful and humorous(not to mention patriotic;)).
I made this post for other people to complain with me, not solve my "problem". NOT saying that I don't appreciate the advice!! But just to reiterate, I don't have any problems with my current home situation. I understand that as my parents they have every right to criticize and much more, and I respect that.
My parents bug me about buying knives sometimes simply to let me know that they care about me and my future. And that involves how and what I spend my money on.

To me it's kind of like a sibling that prods you about something that bugs you every now and then.. Doesn't mean you need to take action, but complaining to others a little bit never hurt! ;)

Sorry friend, can't really help you. I'm over 50 and have only been into knives for a couple of years. My wife doesn't "get it" but she understands it's a hobby of mine so she just largely ignores it. I don't spend more than I can afford and it is WAY less expensive than the things she spends money on that I don't "get," so kind of a mutually assured destruction thing if either one of us brings it up.

But if it helps... Yeah, those meanies!

Maybe I got the "how do you deal with it" wrong, or was simply typing too much.
Anyway, please feel free to ignore my post.

I feel I should probably describe my personal situation a little bit more.. I live at home, I do have a job, and get paid an average amount for my age. I own a jeep and understand that I need a fund in case something happens, because something did just happened actually lol. I'm about to do an engine swap as mines trashed, certainly not cheap! I only buy when I can afford, as I have a small fund that I add to as I can afford. I am not self sustained, they pay for rent an most of my food, everything else I pay.
If I paid 2k a year I would have a heart attack myself! Definitely can't afford that haha :D I'm more a 500 a year IF I can afford it said year kinda guy.

I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way, as I'm not saying this is a serious issue. I love my family dearly, though I'm definitely not going to give up my hobby simply because someone doesn't like it. I was simply bringing it up beacuse I know I'm not the only one out there that faces scrutiny from family or wives.

Maybe this should be moved to the Whine and Cheese section as I guess this was a post just to Whine and see how many other people are like me haha. Although I have a feeling they would rip me to shreds ;)

What you describe doesn't sound out of line. I'm impressed to see you're working, etc at 17. Many your age are flopped on the couch playing video games, so this is to be commended.

If you're talking $500 or so a year on your hobby/interest that's reasonable under the circumstances. You've got to have a little fun in life now and then, so whether it's this or that hobby, just about anything will cost you $500 a year I think even collecting Zippos for heaven's sake. If you're working, doing well in school, keeping your car running with gas and insurance and staying out of trouble I'd be happy as a lark as a parent. Set aside a few bucks for emergencies as said (nearly always car related!) and stay focused on your long-term goals of education and independence, but have a little fun as you go. :)

Nearly everyone "wastes" money to some degree or another. For some people it's video games, clothes, fast-food, etc. At least you have something in your hand that will last YEARS or can be sold to recoup a decent portion of what you paid for it. The other items I just listed are nearly worthless as soon as you leave the store.

I've seen this discussion in many forms over many years of knife collecting. I've come to the conclusion that there's at least a 50% chance that we're the ones who "don't get it." Now ask me if I give a rat's patootie.

There's nothin more American than buying knives and guns, tell them you're doing it for your country
