So i know I am I going to get a BK-16, but I cannot decide what to pair it with on day hikes. I am looking for recommendations on the perfect pairing, is it a BK-2 and BK-16, a 16 and a 7 or am I going about this all wrong? So confused but in a good way.

bk5.

As per your OP you're asking for dayhikes, so a BK16 and a slipjoint/SAK or maybe really nothing else.

You aren't really going to use knives much on a dayhike... cutting food, whittling, trimming off a toothpick, maybe some minor wood prep/feathersticks for a small fire for cooking ramen/coffee whatever. If you're fishing or hunting then it might be a different story, also depends on the environment (one guy I know cuts a new walking stick every time he's in the woods... I hike a lot in the desert, so ain't going to be cutting walking sticks out of cholla cactus anytime soon), being prepared to deal with an unexpected overnighter due to problems like weather/an injury, etc. Ultimately it depends on what you're doing on that hike and how long it's for.

For overnight camping, it'd be a BK16 plus a chopper (BK9, Machax, Cutlass Machete for me) to prep campfire wood then maybe a small slipjoint/SAK/BK13 as well for food prep. I think the BK16 would make the bigger Becker neck knives redundant.

I'd say a less than perfect paring.

I agree with most everything BRL said. There is no "perfect blade", just blades that excel at different tasks/characteristics - some will excel at more things than others. If you want to bring a big chopper just for fun there's nothing wrong with that, but the scenarios where you need one would be few, imo.

A BK5 would be a good lightweight choice, but still very capable and versatile for an 8" blade. So I guess I'd say BK16, SAK, and BK5 if needed.

Edit: of course if where you day hike is much more remote than where I go, you needs may be very different than mine.

Ontario Makes a great Kukri. Full .26 inches thick, Battoning is no problem. It also work good to ta make stakes. its a very handy knife. THat becker kukri is awesome Cilch...

I'd say for a day hike the BK-16 is almost a stand alone, I'd only feel the need to add in a multi-tool/SAK. Probably a decent folder too because how many of us go anywhere without a decent folder?

Like others mentioned above, for a day hike, the BK16 would not necessarily need to be paired with another knife. Maybe a SAK or folding saw, but any fire made during a day hike would most likely be a twig / small branch fire. That eliminates the need to chop or baton anything you'd want a 7 or 9 for.

That said, the perfect pairing, IMO, would be a Ruger Mark II.

The perfect pairing, in MY OPINION, for a 16 on a day hike would be a decent folder, unless you plan on making a bon fire, there is no need for anything bigger than the 16 itself.

Do I really have to post that reaction pic again? you guys make it so easy with these set-ups :D

Do you have an Ontario Kukri, the one with the spec-ops line handles? I'm interested in that knife, but I think the Machax would be a better option.

I would probably do a 3 blade system: BK16, BK9 (for batoning) and a Laplander Folding saw or Sawvivor bow saw. I think that would make an excellent 3 blade system, maybe even a remora in the 9 sheath or a 11/ 14 on the neck?
