Performance: Forged vs Stock Removal

One more point.
Generally I see that artists forge and hobbyists remove stock and that a lot of stock removal makers would rather forge but they don't have the facilities.

That's not to say a hobbyist isn't an artist as well and that full time artists don't remove stock but serious knife "artists" shape metal using forging as their main process .

( and not all forgers are artists. :)

:D:D So Scott according to your opinion (which you are fully entitled to have) Buster Warenski was NOT an artist?? Just one name of many that comes to mind.

and about that Golden Gate bridge you are selling??? I think you would have more buyers than your artist statement!

Just MY opinion.

. I've got some terrible news for some here. These are only knives. Tools. No matter how far we put them up on a pedestal, still just tools. No matter which method, no matter how exotic the handle material, no mater how highly embellished. Still just tools. Plain and simple. All of this time wasted on arguing as to which is best is pure fantasy. It's all good. None is perfect!

God, I'm glad we don't argue about hammers and wrenches this way. Humm? Maybe carpenters and mechanics do. I never bothered asking!

I still love them much more than any thing in my tool box though +1 ! :D;)

Mike,
this one comment is sticking in my head for some reason.

Suppose it deserves its own thread, could entitle it "Just a knife" ? Would be interesting to hear the response.

Oh-No! Now I'll really be in trouble!:D

But you may have something there. ;)

shhh! don't tell anyone. I don't carry a wrench or a hammer, but I don't- wont leave the House without at least one knife on me.

Well one hammer, but it's on the .45!!! Another fantastic tool that has stood the test of time. Long live the 1911!

Well the 1911 anyway. I reserve the Chute for heading to the hills. This is what I carry every day. Its the All Integral Stiff Horn. I got the pattern from Bob Loveless. And decided to make a few in the Integral style. I love-it!!!

Just spent the morning viewing "art" blades.
Buster Warenski made some beautiful knives, sculpture in my mind.

Interesting though that almost all the stock removal artists use some damascus in their creations. Time saved to produce their art perhaps?

Personally Peter I've only a small amount of instinct. My wife is a natural. I work like a bug..r to make a living, with the smallest footprint, building working blades that perform. I can only aspire to being inspired while I'm creating.
The cliche: art is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.

Don't you dare! If you make an integral New York Special that I can't get my hands on, I'm coming looking for you. :p

In my opinion, your knives have every bit as much soul (if that is what it is) as forged knives do. The soul comes from what a maker puts into a knife, now how they make it.
