I did some research on small fixed blade (I want to buy one for my birthday) and found a handfull of good ones like Bear Claw, Arclite, AG Russell Scalpel etc.
But there are almost no posts on the SOG Topo.

Is there a reason for it? Bad Sheath? Crap material? etc?

I am actually quite fond of the design.

Well no posts so far, so here's my two cents:
It looks stupid, with that logo integrated into the handle.
Even worse than blades with company billboards printed on them.
I bet this tends to drive off people around here. It certainly does for me.

OK, its probably a useful knife. But given a choice between something useful, and something else that is equally useful but looks stupid, thats not really a hard decision to make.

I can't speak to its lack of publicity, but I have handled the knife. The blade is pretty well executed - nice and sharp, with a very pointy tip. But SOG lately seems to have this obsession with making knives that actually *stick* in your hand when held. This thing had the most pointy, painful grip checkering pattern I've ever come across. I mean, you wouldn't drop the piece, but how does that help if you've blacked out from the pain of holding it?

OK, maybe I'm a pansy - but I've never been able to keep a callus for more than a week, so unless I was swinging that thing around in earnest every few days, people like me would never get used to it.

On the up side, the logo didn't really bother me at all. The sheath, however was not so hot. Didn't really hold the blade in properly. Might have been a fluke.

Hope that helps!

I agree 100% and have mentioned this before. SOG ought to pay more attention to the knife buying market. I've seen many members here complain about names an logos being too big. Even the knives with SOG skeletonized in the clip on most of their models is cheesy as heck. :barf:

SOGs typically have sheath problems. In my opinion that is their biggest turn off for fixed blades. But it isn't that difficult to get an aftermarket sheath done. They use pretty good materials most of the time. I'm impressed with how well they treat their AUS 8. That said, I haven't handled too many of their newer designs, so I can't attest to most of the handles. And if something doesn't feel good in your hand, then it doesn't matter too much how good the blade is.

Just a quick comment on the "SharpPainful Checkering" It doesn't have to be that sharp or painful at all! I may even be able to fix it for you so that it is more comfortable to hold on to!

Wups, thought that nobody would answer to my thread and ordered the satin Topo Contour the next day...
Too bad.

I really like the knife design though, the sheath shouldn't be a problem, another forum user squeezed the kydex together by using heat from his hairdryer, ergo a more snug fit. Concerning the painful grip: I ordered the knife from wolfster online shop (www.wolfster.de) and on the pic the Topo had a flat grip, no checkering.

Worse comes to worse, it will be in my drawer with the other knives collecting dust.
