I have an order of a Nessmuk out of D2, customer wants it to be black-ish...

I did learn how to Parkerize steel with phosphoric acid + Manganese oxide solution. Also I know it is not applicable to stainless steel. I want to know if parkerizing will work on D2 or not. It is not an SS, also it is sensitive acids compared to real stainless steels...

Thanks..

Emre

It will not take parkerizing, before heat treat it will get somewhat gray, but after heat treating, nothing happens. If you figure out a way to get it to work, let me know!

I have only used Black Gunkote on D2

Thanks Tom, your input is greatly appreciated. I was ordering phosphoric acid then I saw your reply just in time to cancel the order...
I think I will sandblast and FeCl etching will be my way to go...

I will have to try blasting with the ferric. I think I may have tried ferric with out blasting and it did not touch the D2 to darken it. Good luck and post pictures of the result!

On the subject, I have 1075 from McMaster Carr that will not take a Ferric etch. I process W1 and 1075 the same (except for tempering); the W1 becomes near-black, the 1075 near-nothing.

"Tool Black" (copper selenium deposit coating; AKA Caswells "Black Oxide"; AKA "cold black oxide") seems to work on everything - it will probably work on D2.
