Just got one. This is an interesting knife. I'm more of a user than a collector and I don't really keep knives that don't get pocket time. Not sure yet if this will be a carrier for me.

Summary: This ticks a lot of boxes for me: great steel, slicey, fit and finish, unique, deep carry/tip up, and great handle material. Challenges are the weight and handle thickness. Note that I am gravitating toward smaller and lighter - I'm carrying a Chaparral most days. This feels huge in comparison.

F&F: The fit and finish are great. Another Taichung knife that just blows me away. I'm rubbing my fingers all over the back and front side of the liners/frame. Not a sharp edge anywhere. I mean none. No obvious chamfering of edges, but they feel great. Backspacer to scales alignment is dead on.

Handle: Scales are fantastic. I keep rubbing my thumb over the presentation side. This has to be my favorite CF handle by a lot. Deep (100% deep) carry clip that looks great. Appears to be RH carry only - sorry Lefties. The tip of the clip is a hot-spot in my palm, unfortunately. Less so if I choke up and use the finger choil. Little bit of a hot spot on the liner lock for me as well. Also goes away if I use the choil. I think the far side of the cutout (away from the blade) is higher than it needs to be. (Can explain this better if needed.)

Blade: I was concerned about the blade thickness - remember that I love the Chaparral. This thing is an ffg and is slicey. It's not the chaparral, but it's better than many other blades with thinner stock. It slices well. The cutting edge to handle ratio looks a little small (haven't measured yet). There is a minor swedge that tapers off toward the tip. Evenly ground on both sides and looks great.

Action: Action is stiff but smooth. Haven't disassembled or loosened the pivot. Maybe could run less stiff? As it is I won't be Spydie flicking it open. The Spydie hole also partially covered by the lock, which also makes flicking it a challenge. Lockup is ~30% and rock solid. No hint of blade play in any direction.

Carry: It carries well. It disappears 100% into the pocket with the great deep carry clip. The thickness isn't really an issue. It's a little wide to get my hand past but not obnoxious at all. The smoothness and curve of the back help a lot.

Issue for me: This is a thicker, heavier knife than I like to carry. The solid backspacer also moves the balance fairly far behind the pivot, so it's handle heavy. I almost wish they'd used a CF back-spacer. That would have ruined the great look on the back, but would have helped with the weight.

Wish list: put it on a diet, give it a detent ramp, fix the lock hot-spot and maybe the clip hot-spot (this could just be my hands).

On the fence about moving it into the carry rotation due to size and weight. Quality, fit/finish, blade, and scales are simply exceptional. And for me it's a stunning looking knife.

Will post some pics if there's interest. Apologies for the long-winded overview.

EDIT: Pics added. Used a phone, so apologies for the close-ups not being better. Also wiped it down with a yellow microfiber towel so you'll see some fibers on it in some shots.

I think the lock could be lowered on the left a mm or two.

I may put put the clip in a vice and bend the ramp down just a little.

Blade is very sharp. Cuts newsprint as well.

The PPT is a really cool design, I especially love the action and sliciness. It's like you said though, the weight is just a little too much.

Interesting reviev - needs pics though.

The PPT is one of my favorite Spyderco knives.

Sits well in the hand and looks great.

I concur with some of your points.

Before transitioning to some of the more light weight Spyderco knives, I would not have thought the PPT heavy per se but we are so spoiled by the relative light weight Spyderco slicers.

Yes, I do notice the difference in weight when I hold the Endura, PM2 or some other light weight Spyderco compared to the PPT.

That doesnt discourage me from using the PPT - its just something I notice in passing.

I like the PPT so much, that I bought two - in fact I like the Perrin Spyderco knives so much, that I bought two Street Bowies and two Street Beats as well.

Correct.

If it wasnt a slicer before, it is now:D
Interesting. My stock one is pretty slicey already. I can see that you moved the grind back toward the handle. Did you thin it at the top as well? Did you do this or a specialist? Or are you the specialist?

I just bought it like that.

IIRC the blade is thinned all the way to the top.

I like it.

As you say, the PPT already comes as a pretty good slicer from the factory.

I suspect someone did it, just because they could.

Its a mean mean slicer.

I like the PPT enough that I added the new sprint to the black blade one I already have. The new one is very nice - great scales, great steel. The overall design is a great cutting blade (as a blade should be) on a very ergonomic handle. The only downside to me is the weight and chunkiness, but that is in comparison to the knife I rotated out to get the PPT in, a Chaparral :) Not a fair comparison with respect to slenderness and weight! But the PPT carries very well and surprisingly unnoticeably in my office pants. Maybe not for a suit, but not really a problem for casual wear. The other attributes are so good that I will carry it.

Not much compares to the Chaparral for sliciness. Maybe some A.G. Russell knives (with terrible steel and other issues)...

The bottom one with the custom grind is awesome. I’ve always thought that’s the way Spyderco should have made it.

Update: My PPT apparently has a new owner. Showed it to the wife. She generally likes knives a little bigger and heavier than I do and seems to really like this one. She doesn't like deployment holes (prefers thumb studs). Despite the hole, she has absconded with it. I think it's replacing the Boker in her car.

:) It is a nice looking high performance cutting tool, so ya gotta give her credit!
Now is an excellent time to pick up another one, before they get scarce again.

Huge credit. She likes knives, so even more credit for that. Second, she uses hers on the job every day (unlike me and many others here). She has a true need and cuts everything with it. She would never consider using Chaparral or a Delica.

Interestingly, if you line up our knives there's a clear distinction: lighter, thinner, shorter blades are all mine. The TSF Gorgon, ZT 0562, and a few others larger than 3.5" are all hers. Just a preference, or maybe somebody with a work need vs. somebody doing yard work and cutting rope.

EDIT: Should have mentioned this earlier, but I'm going to put a Shaman in her hands and see how that goes. Guessing it'll displace something else.

I believe I am the previous owner to the custom grind on the bottom. Its like that to make it a better slicer and to remove the many hot spots. I always regretted selling that one.

The PPT always interested me and over the years I've owned 3 and sold them off after I realized why I sold the previous.
Just too heavy and thick for what it is.
And being a flipper fan, this model somehow just screams for a tab.
Not that it needs a flipper because the hole works exceptionally well.
And titanium liners!
Lighten this baby up.

The custom solves all these except the flipper... I should have bought one before Sacha became a well known maker ;)
