Hi,

I received an email today from the Knifecenter saying they had the Street Beat in stock. They want $160 for this knife. I have not shopped around so I don't have any idea if $160 is the going rate but, if it is, I am stunned. Why in the world would someone be willing to pay this kind of money for a factory made knife in VG10 when for $200 one could purchase, for example, the Street Warrior, a Ken Brock custom is S30V with a Paul Bos heat treat. Bob Dozier has many customs in the $220 range. I don't get it.

It seems to me to be worth every penny they are asking....what's not to like....Perrin design.....Spyderco execution and customer service. Ya think it's too much ?...don't buy it !

-regards

I like the design and was looking forward to the Street Beat's introduction. I just got sticker shock at the price for a production piece.

doesnt a genuine perrin run in the $250 range??

if its pretty much like a genuine perring it might not be toooo bad, is kinda high though, nice knife nontheless.

From what I've seen, both J85909266 and Gramps like Spyderco knives. Just not the same ones, happily Spyderco obviously makes something for each. :)

I'm sure Spydercos already lost sleep over it ! :D

Based on the overall reaction to the price, I'm guessing it does concern them a bit. I really like the knife, but I can't justify paying that for it at this time. No offense to Spyderco or anybody else. Spyderco makes plenty that I do find well worth the money.

Why would I pay over $200 for a knife with S30V when I can get a solid slab of far superior VG-10 for $50 less.;)

Sorry, couldn't help but be sarcastic on this one. If it was S30V, no one would blink twice about the price, but apparently I missed the memo where it was stated that VG-10 was vastly inferior. I've always found them to be roughly comparable, with S30V having slightly better edge retention, and VG-10 being tougher.

You guys don't see the point of paying this much for a knife that's "only" VG-10, I don't see the point of paying a premium for S30V.

Guess we'll all just agree to not buy what we can't justify the cost for.

..............so many knives, and not enough money ! It seems everywhere I look these days something well made and intriguing catches my eye. And certainly I want to get the best bang for my buck. For sure the Street Beat has a lot of competition at it's price point. It is a "'niche" fixed blade however, not that it can't fill many roles. It's "billed" as an "urban" companion, and certainly isn't going to appeal to the "wood batoning" crowd. Fred's knife is light and incredibly quick in the hand; the micarta handle is extremely well done......and then there is the legendary Spyderco edge on the Blade. I see a simplicity in Mr. Perrin's design that's ( forgive me ) brilliant.....collaborations increase end line pricing.

We are fortunate that Sal is willing to listen to our feedback, with such patience and genuine interest.......of course that's what makes Spyderco unique; but any enterprise that's unwilling to consider customer concerns is doomed, in the end, to suffer. It strikes me that the knife business must be a bit like walking a tight rope.

That's my 2 cent's....and frankly my opinion is not worth even that !

-Regards to everyone !

I never said anything about the steel. If it were S30V, I, personally, would be even less likely to buy it, as I find it to be a finnicky steel ,and VG10 to be far more consistent and reliable.

I've read several reports on s30v C41 Native's brittleness, but never heard anything like that on VG10. I would guess either it's because s30v requires more complicated and precise heat treatment or the manufacturers in seki Japan got better heat treatment facilities?

You also have to consider that a Kydex sheath with a Tek Lok fastener is included in the cost. Price one made by any of the Kydex sheath makers and you'll see what that adds to the knife cost.

Kydex sheath is definately a plus. But I would rather spyderco make it with kraton or g10 handles instead of the current "exotic" micarta and price the knife at around $150 MSRP
