Any of you guys have one of these?

I'm thinking about getting one ^^^, I only have one Spyderco (that I use... the other is a Harpy:rolleyes:), a Calypso 3 in Vg10 steel. Do I need this Persian in Vg10? Or should I go with the Para-Military in S30v?

I use folders for folder things, such as opening packages and general light cutting/slicing at work and around town. I have fixed blades for rough use. Is the added heft of the Paramilitary necessary in my case? Or would it's added heft get in the way? Is the compression lock as good as I hear on these?

I was going to get the Paramilitary, but the handle on the Persian looks to perfect to pass up... without some thought.

Please explain your reasons for any suggestions you make, I'm interested in all opinions and thoughts, especially if you own both knives mentioned. BTW... Caly3's are unreal, quality through and through, however, I need to feed the addiction.;)

Thank you in advance!
Greg

Both are beautiful knives---wonderfully functional both for cutting chores, and for ergonomic handles.

I like the Para Military because of the thoughtful design of the Compression Lock, the fully flat ground blade---it slices like no other, and is a great penetrator---and the plain-good ergos of the blade. Making the Military in a two-thirds size was one of the best ideas in the history of cutlery.

The Persian has many things going for it too---the beautiful micarta handles, robust and solid feel, and the bank-vault solid Spyderco backlock.

It's really merely a choice of personal preference---both will serve you well, without doubt.

Here's my vote, for all the reason's listed above and with D2 it's one of the sharpest knives out of the box that I own. And you can feel good that it was made in the USA.

The Persian is more of a dressy knife, and the Para is more of a work knife, imo. I prefer the compression lock on the Para. The para is also lighter and easier to clean.

.:edit:. I too prefer the CPMD2 version.:thumbup::thumbup:

Thats the small persian, its a really nice little knife

Im a total sucker for Persianesk blades so I do like this knife allot.
The D2 Para is also a superb knife and has one of my favorite steels too.

There is really only one answer here though, thats to get both :)

.............if you don't have an elegant folder for EDC the Persian is the way to go. Because of the up swept blade it cuts like a much longer blade. Like it's bigger brother, which has been discontinued, it's destine to be a classic collectible.

The Para-Military just might be the best 3" folder it's price range.

It's a tough call.....the good news is you can't go wrong either way ! ;)

Thanks for the info. guys!:D I may have to get both now.:o However, is the D2 paramilitary preferred over the S30v model? It seems like the D2 version is more popular here. I find that surprising, I always heard/thought D2 was inferior, i.e. too brittle, this is hearsay on my part, as I don't have any real experience with either. Soooo, one last question... D2 or S30v?:D The S30v one's are everywhere I have noticed.

Well the D2 model is a sprint run, and it is CPM-D2 which makes it easier to sharpen than regular D2 (I think), also the D2 model has foliage green G10 instead of black, but they did just come out with a sweet looking S30V model with digi-camo G10.

Good luck, I am sure you will like which ever one you choose
(Man I'm glad it was only a choice between green D2 or black S30V, cause the new digi would have made my decision even harder)

The Persian is a very beautiful knife, arguably the most beautiful Spyderco has ever made. But you can't ignore the outright practicality of the para. I'd go with the para.

I just bought the D2 para and I can't say enough about it. Shaving sharp right out of the box. Perfect knife for any chore. Really great knife.
