Well my old gas mask finally but the dust, so I upgraded...

What are you guys using?

Can anybody tell me why PAPR systems are so ungodly expensive? Doesn’t seem to really be much to them, all things considered.

Well, it is sort of a "You get what you pay for" situation.

One reason is they have to pass rigid testing and approval, because they are life protecting devices in industry. Industrial products are always higher priced than hobby use devices.
Two, the batteries are usually very model specific, which always creates a high price for the battery.
Three, most PAPR systems are made from much better grade materials, as they are used every day in industry.

Shopping around on Ebay and other sites can find good PAPR systems for a fraction of the new price. Sometimes, the best deal comes from buying the hood, blower, and batteries separately.

I use a modified Breathe Easy system.

I was thinking about upgrading to the versaflo... But right now I'm using the breathe easy until I get more cash on hand haha

Did you get that new or used?

I got it new, and admittedly it was spendy. But I had the money on hand because I worked a crap ton of overtime last pay period.

I haven't had the opportunity to use it much yet, just tried it on and did a little LARP...
But just wearing it around a little bit I did notice how much comfortable it is than the gas mask.

It's lighter, has integrated hearing protection and the filter is located on a belt, so it doesn't pull your head down. The field of view is better too!

So far so good, when I actually get some use out of it I'll come back for a review.

Yeah I love how the visor flips up out of the way of you need to take a drink or talk on the phone... Also the cool breeze is nice when it's hot hehe

This is the one I'm considering

Nice! So you know if it can integrate somehow with a welding hood? Cause that would be super nice!

That's pretty awesome, I might have to see if 3m does the same... I'm assuming they do, I mean they make everything else you can think of...

Stacy, mind if I ask how yours is modified?

3m half face w/ P100 filters. i would love to wear the full face but much of the time i am wearing magnification headsets.

I wear a half face Moldex 8003 with P100 cartridges and an additional N95 prefilter.

I have that moldex as well along with a couple of 3M with quick release
I like the way the moldex fits, but its heavier and I think the strap design is a poor idea.
I much prefer the 3M quick release and separated strap vs the Moldex continuous strap.

I guess it’s a case of “you don’t know what your missing”. I’ve been using these masks for the last 20 years shoveling grain when we clean out our grain bins. Thinking they were the greatest thing ever. Before that we only used paper dust masks that would get caked up in 10 minutes, less if you were sweating and we are always sweating.

In the new shop I plan on a central HEPPA air supply and piping that will allow the umbilical hose to be plugged in anywhere in the shop. I will have overhead ports in the grinding room, so the hose will hang and allow movement to any machine. I can use any helmet that has a hose fitting. This also allows many people to wear PAPR.
