N2K and Rubi have both stated the obvious to us on the Hinderer sub forum. I have only been a member for a little more than a year, however I have been treated like family from day one by our members and also Rick, Rob and the crew at Hinderer Knives. I have been a collector/user since I first cut my right index finger with an Imperial fixed blade that I won by selling the most seeds in a fund raiser for cub scouts at age six, over 55 years ago (for the slower members doing the math I'm 61).
When I read some posters bashing Hinderer Knives it obviously is not because of the quality or the man whose name is so predominantly displayed on each piece, rather its jealousy, wanting something which maybe unattainable presently, or self satisfying. If this knife is not for you move on to something that mirrors your desires, or better yet try making your own minus all the flaws that you find necessary to point out to us.
In the knife business as well as you know it is a very competitive business with makers and manufactures using any and all angles to peddle their knives. To me I believe one of the most important aspects of this business is who is the man behind the product, period! The connection for me to Hinderer Knives is Rick and his dedicated staff. I have only once found a maker who parallels my values and quality of work and that is Randall Made Knives.
I have an extensive collection of Randall Made Knives, some that I have used in my career. I was fortunate to meet Bo Randall at his shop and his son Gary. Although Bo has passed on his similarities with Rick are evident; patriotic, both have a small remote shops, a waiting list for their knives, uncompromising attention to detail with best possible materials used, focus on providing our service people with the best possible knife, and both HUMBLE (unlike what we see from some individual posters).
An example of what I'm speaking about takes me back to 1984 at the Randall Shop. I made the trek all the way down from the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of NYS in the iconic family vehicle of the time, the Dodge Caravan with three kids and a supportive wife. The family was holed up at the hotel, the wife enjoying the Florida sunshine along the pool and kids playing Marco Polo in the pool while dad slipped away for a few hours to the Randall Shop (perfect). Buying a Randall was also a challenge like Hinderer Knives, waiting lists were 2 or 3 years or from a dealer also like Hinderer Knives at a premium. So my intention was just to enjoy seeing the shop, where these famed knives were produced and look around the museum.
As I'm walking around the museum an elderly gentleman approaches me and exchanges pleasantries I knew immediately that it was Bo, I reached out and shook his hand and said a pleasure to meet you Mr. Randall. I'll never ever forget that moment when he grasped my hand and slowly shook it and said my name is Bo and the pleasure is mine and thank you for coming to see my knives. Here is the man who Presisent Ronald Regan purchased a set of knives to present to the King of Sudia Arabia, the iconic man who produced the Astro for our space program, the man who has his knives in the Smithsonian, and who has had his knives in our servicemen's hands since WWII.
Anyhow we small talked for awhile and I told him of my SWAT career just budding and how I placed an order from his shop and am patiently waiting for the delivery. He said Joe come with me, he led me into the shop and personally gave me a tour with refreshments and all. He went to the finish station and said I think this knife will suit your needs and pulled a knife from the line and handed it to me. I paid him the advertised price and was ecstatic with my new knife and the interaction with Bo.
Fast forward to Blade 2012, there he was behind the counter the man himself, Rick Hinderer I introduced myself and said it is a pleasure to meet you Mr.Hinderer. The response was, " hi my name is Rick and thanks for coming by my booth". A little small talk ensued and I have told this story before but he hands me his personal knife from his pocket and says look it over and walks away. As I am enjoying the moment this guy by the name of Rob comes over and we hit it off too, he hands me a new skinner design and walks off to talk with someone else. When Rob comes back I hand him the knives and walk around the show, but like a magnet I felt the tug and repeatedly returned to their booth for the next two days.
I am proud to be Hinderer Knife owner as well as many of you, and as Hinderer Knives evolves and refinements slowly ebb into productions, it still is about the man behind the product and the whole Hinderer Team that makes one of the best knives on earth!
