The " survival kit" is a tough thing for me.
In my mind, when all is lost, my survival kit is the only things that are in my pockets , around my neck, or directly attached to my person ( on your belt)...anything else that i have with me at that point is an asset..( fully equiped SK, backpack with food/gear)
whenever i go out into the wilderness i have these items on my person at all times, no matter what.
Around my neck or in my pockets
-Orange Fox 40 whistle
-Pelican 1930 L1 LED flashlight
-Fixed blade knife
-Leatherman wave
-Suunto MCA compass
-LMF army firesteel with piece of fatwood attached
-25' of 550 paracord
-space blanket
-snare wire
-fishing kit
-small FAK
-2 or 3 bic lighters ( in different pockets)
-Waterproof match container with strike anywhere matches + striker
-aluminum foil
-10'x10' of poly for waterproofing a shelter in a hurry
-Roll of black electrical tape
All that stuff above goes into my pockets, some of it i hang around my neck and the knife goes on my belt.
Its my BASE survival kit. At least i have enough stuff on me directly so survive for a night or two...And thats only if i have lost every other piece of gear i would have with me when i go out..like my full out survival kit, my backpack with all my food, extra clothes etc.
The reason i dont carry it all in one container in my pocket is that if for whatever reason my pocket gets ripped and i dont notice my base SK fall out.. I am SOL if the sh*t hits the fan....even so if i lost everything IN my pockets, my firesteel/fatwood combo, compass, fox 40 whistle, flashlight would be around my neck..and my knife on my belt..How can you lose?
Yes, somtimes the stuff hanging around my neck is a major pain in the a$$ and if you are needing to be stealthy you have to tape it all together to eliminate noise, but i am willing to deal with it to know that it every single other survival impliment i have gets lost in the river or lost if i fell down a hillside i still have whats in my pockets, and if not i still have whats around my neck and on my belt.
somthing to consider..
