We haven't seen much of our esteemed moderator lately, which I assumes means they're busy cooking up new goodies for us, but let me stir up a hornet's nest with the hope of driving Joe out of the woodwork...

Lots of comments in the past on what to do with Pete's custom Knife shoppe. What I gather people want is:

More folders:
532,
112 Ranger,
Some Fixed Blades:
Vanguard,
Mentor,
Big Sky (OK, thats just me, but what the hey...)
Other handle materials:
Micarta in various forms
G10

Does that about sum up what would make Pete's Perfect? Personally I hope none of this happens until AFTER I've gotten the two I've ordered, and the 3 more I want, (maybe 4), just so I can budget, but what do the rest of you think?

Peace,

Al Folsom

PS What is the standard delivery time on PCKS? I have two outstanding orders, one is nearly 5 weeks, and one is nearly 3 (Payday twice a month...)

Al, you are reading my mind! You're not alone on the Big Sky upgrade dreams either, a BG-42 blade with thin G10 would be one heck of a knife! I don't expect Buck to throw a bunch of models in all at once tho, maybe add one or two over a years time and see how they do.

I could go for a vanguard in D-2 or maybe 52100

What I would love to see happen is for them to start making that little bird and trout knife that was made in the 70s, only with a flat ground BG42 blade.

Al,
You sure know how to get my attention! Sorry for the absense, i have been buried!
We are looking at adding the Vanguard and Zipper later this year. Are there really that many wanting the Big Sky? I would love to see one in damascus with a wenge handle. I will ask those that decideif this might be doable.
On another note, I am trying to have a manual form developed so you will not need a computer, or credit card for that matter! I figured, "hey, lets make it easy or something!"

Cool! And left handed sheaths??
wink.gif

I realize the vanguard and zipper are essentially the same knife, but I couldn't care less about pete's making a Zipper. It's essentially a special purpose knife, and not one I'd like to upgrade or make pretty.

The Big Sky is, I think, a great knife for Buck. Smaller fixed blades are a good market, and the Big Sky fits that category. The way it is made ought to make it easy to customize a la Pete's. Actually, I'd like a slightly thinner blade (back to edge), and slightly less chunky handle, and it would be about perfect, that is, if it came with a left-handed sheath....

The other thing that would make Pete's great is some working online order tracking. I'm really salivating over the ones I ordered 5 and 3 weeks ago, and not being able to find out the status is frustrating. The only saving grace is the stag handled, BG42, NS bolster one I got used from somebody here on the forums, and which is now riding on my belt

Good to hear from you again!!!

Peace,

Al

Al,
So when are you going to get off this "left handed sheath thing"
wink.gif

But seriously, i am hoping to get more models online this year. I am reluctant to take a survey until i KNOW i am actually going to be able to offer something. No sense in getting everybodies hopes up. It looks good right now for the 191/192 and i will be asking about the 532/403.
Take care,

This is the thread I was talking about in my other thread, called "Pete's Customs" or whatever.

Cheap way of getting this one back to the top.

(custom Mentor?)

Believe it or not, our decision for PCKS2001 was a big tossup between the Vanguard/Zipper and the Big Sky. In the end, we can do more with the Vanguard so we went with that.

The Big Sky is a favorite of mine too. There may be some things we can do with them through The Shoppe if we stay with 420HC. Dana loves a challenge.

* C'mon guys, let's keep this one on top.

Hi Pete--

Joe's getting too good for us, you have handle the forum now??
wink.gif

Sounds good. I'm surprised that you can do more with the vanguard though... The blade on the Big Sky is smaller, and the scales are two obviously separate pieces, whereas the Vanguard appears whole, which I think would be harder to match up. Put me dowsn for a Indigo Royalwood handle with BG42 blade, and maybe a stag handle with damascus...

Actually, PCKS is driving me crazy. I've order 5 so far (only four for me), and can easily think of 3-4 more I want, all in 110's. You expand this, and you may bankrupt me. (I can see myself along the side of a road, 5 day growth of beard, with a cardboard crayon-lettered sign -- "will program or design web pages for knives")

I would really love to see a knife roughtly the length of the Big Sky, but with a thinner, more general purpose drop point blade. Something IK can whittle and cut food with!

Peace, Al

Yup, a custom Mentor is something I've been hinting(whining?) about for some time.
wink.gif

I think the Mentor blade shape is very cool, good for utility or "other" purposes, needs a handle option tho. Of course, steel upgrade to BG42 is my fervant wish(gee, do you see a pattern here) and a different style sheath (pouch). OK, that's all, just a total revamp, no problem!
wink.gif

The Big Sky is another great candidate too.
Although I'll always opt for nicer steel, my Big Sky with E2K works real well in 420.

Pete,

What I would love to see from PCKS is an optional drop point blade with the same other choices of blade steel and handle inlays for the 110. A drop point blade following the graceful arc of the 110's spine would be not only beautiful but also quite strong and functional.

I think it would make a really dramatic option.

I would also LOVE to see a drop point blade offered for the 110 in BG-42 by Pete's shop. I find it to be the most useful shape for my uses.

You raise an interesting question.

After some thought though, I do not see that there would be a problem. It seems to me that there should be no difference required in the blade attachment to the handle and the locking mechanism.

A continuation of the arc of the handle downward would seem to drop the point to about the same place as it now is with the clip point and I do not see that any change in the belly would be necessary, so there should be no problem with the clearance of the blade in the closed position.

When closed the only obvious difference would be a smooth arc of the back of the blade from the front to rear of the handle.

I realize that there may be factors of which I am unaware and also that there may be flaws in my thinking on this. I will gratefully accecpt correction.

What are your thoughts?

I have a drop point Bucklite 426. Got it in the early 80's brand new. Beautiful blade shape! I'll try to post a pic later. Now, the 426 appears to be a 110 made with plastic handles. (I've seen a 110 with a 426 blade in it.) So there's no reason a drop point blade would not fit in the 110. On the other hand, there are probably a few reasons that it won't happen, but I'll let Joe take that up once he's had his fill of wild turkey with sage stuffing, lots of gravy to go with the mashed potatos and baby carrots glazed with honey.

Dave,

You are correct sir.

The original 426 had a drop point blade - it was a standard 110 blade in every way, with out the clip chamfer.

Not a big seller tho. It was such a dramatic difference that it just wasn't identified as a "Buck" knife.

We would love to put a drop point on our 110's simply because that design is inherently more resistant to breakage, and we would be eliminating a machining step. Breakage is the big thing, remember, we replace just about everything. But, there are just some things that shouldn't be modernized.

-you might say-

What about the Custom Knife Shoppe?

The big issue there is demand as well. Blades like that would need to be cut on our laser - which is busy enough with standard product. I would need a pretty air-tight justification before I can go down there and say "... could you please zot me out a couple hundred chamferless 110's".

Warhawk: we'll see just how much pull Joe has in the machine shop. As you know, Joe is a member of People Eating Tasty Animals.

Al,

Little me moderate this forum. Hmmmm.

I'd like to, but just couldn't fit in Joe's shoes (litterally and figuratively).

Joe's a fine individual, and a hard workin' hombre. And, if I keep being nice to him maybe he'll part with any one of those awesome collectible knives in his office. But that's another post all together.

Joe,

Pete indicates that you are the man.

Is it possible to get a drop point blade offered as an option in PCKS?

Perhaps in just BG-42 and IonFusion? Damascus?

If you can get this option available I will start ordering now.

Thanks for your consideration.
