PETITION: Save the Amphibian!

It would appear that MT needs to come out with a few models aimed at entry level ELU's and eveyday joes. I have never owned a MT. Any I have ever looked at were beutifully done.

Trent,
I completely agree with your sentiments here, but when the discussion is restricted to your typical or average knife buyer, it's very likely that such a title wouldn't mean much at all. Not because the average knife buyer wouldn't be interested in owning the "world's strongest mechanical folder", but because that title alone would do nothing to separate the Amphibian from every other folder made by every other knife manufacturer who also claims that their folders are the "world's strongest". Just take a look at the way Lynn Thompson can hang weights off the back of a plastic handled folder if you don't believe me. Like it or not, marketing gimmicks like that can be very convincing to the average Joe.

Of course I'm not happy with what has become of the Amphibian, but I suppose I can live with the disappointment if it means that Microtech will live to fight another day.

Bill you make a good point. But I think that just underlies what I and a lot of other people have been saying all along. How can I put this...people that buy Lynn Thompson's bs are a different animal than those that buy Microtechs. In a word, with the plunge lock, (especially in a Ti handle) MT really would have had the world's strongest mechanical folder. And even with the Microbar, I doubt you're going to sell MTs to the guy that can't discern between the two and only sees the $185 MT vs. the $65 voyager. The "average consumer" everybody's been talking about is a lot smarter than everybody's been giving him credit for. But you have to give people tangible reasons to spend 1/4 of their paycheck on a knife. Microtech has been getting by for a while on "fit and finish," but do a search under Microtech or Socom lock failure. The people I talk to all cite lock failure concerns as reasons they don't buy MT liner locks or microbars. This was their chance to have a real solid knife.
