Petitions for a ZDP189 ParaMilitary with Titanium Framelock.

Para 2 is a golden model and most likely won't happen :-(
True that. I'm a strong advocate of exotic sprint models, but this might be a bit too much. Spyderco uses the RIL on a few models, but not as many as other makers. The cost of exporting materials, machining titanium, etc. Would put the price tag up to a level of uncomfortable for many.
Might have better luck asking for an all new model that would have a RIL, and some sort of exotic steel from Japan or BU, although CTS has been making some very good quality steels as we've been able to try them with the Manix2, Para2, etc. Never hurts to ask though.

Kershaw/ZT made the 0350 in ZDP, and it's made in USA.
Yes they did, but they also have more employees and a larger facility than Spyderco. Also, the 0350ZDP is not a Ti framelock. For a framelock Para, all new machining would have to be done, prototypes, time, etc. there might be too many models confirmed for production for this to "just happen" is what I am saying. Production companies schedule things down to the minute and run a tight ship, missing an internal deadline is measured in terms of profits and losses. Also, they don't run machinery 24/7/365.

Sal said they can bring in any steel they want except zdp... it just isn't ideal for them to do

It would be great if they came out with another run of the RIL Military exlusive from Knifeworks.

If you can't get Japanese steels for Golden production what about a Millie or PM in 52100 or 3V? I know 3V is for tough blades, big blades, choppers and whatnot...But I can get such a keen edge on it and with the fine tips...why not 3V?

I say leave the ZDP for Japanese made blades. There are plenty of very high performance steels for Golden to use without going through the trouble and cost having a Japan made P2 in ZDP, or any other steel for that matter. I do like ZDP though. It's a great steel/

Tooling costs for Ti version...

Conflicts between US production and ZDP restrictions...

...not likely, unfortunately.

Hi Ion,

Interesting concept, but as already mentioned, it would be one of those combinations that would be challenging. Hitachi wants us to heat treat ZDP in Japan. I've heard that Kershaw has done some ZDP in Oregon. I don't know how they do it. We do a fair amount of ZDP (probably more than any other manufacturer) and the current system is working well.

The Para is made in Golden.

I too prefer my s90v para 2, for me s90 blows zdp189 out of the water. Not saying i don't like zdp I just like s90 more! If they made either a Millie or Para2 in 110v or K390- (theres another thread talking about K390 and the like) this would really be something special:thumbup:

Yeah, as much as I like certain super steels like M4 or ZDP-189, I love S90V so much more for its amazing edge holding and stainless ability. My climate is pretty humid, and when I carry an m4 knife in the summer, it tends to have a bit of rust on it by the end of the day unless I am constantly applying oil. I would love to see a frame-lock para 2. That would be one of the coolest knives ever! A frame-lock Ti/G10 super steel one :)

I understand however, that the golden plant does have limitations. In stead of seeing more specials come out, i'd love to see other blades made in the US factory. Move more of the US steel knives back to the US completely. I wish some of the new knives like the Southfork and the Techno were made in the US. Oh well.

I still have great respect for everything that Sal does. His willingness to interact with customers and patrons on this forum, and others, is outstanding. Furthermore, the knives that he does produce and design are top notch in terms of blade steels, handle materials, ergonomics, and everything else!

Thank you spyderco for everything that you do!

Sincerely,

Danny

P.S. Keep up the innovation! :)

I prefer my s90v compression lock :o
+1 on this. As much as I love titanium framelocks (my favorite type of lock/knife design), the compression lock is an essential part of the Para 2's design; without it, it'd be a totally different knife. I'd also take CPM-S90V or CTS-20CP (Carpenter's version of S90V) over ZDP-189 in a heartbeat.
