Does petroleum jelly work to keep rust at bay?

I carry cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly for firestarting. So I have the petroleum jelly around.

And I have been spreading it liberally on the edge of my machete, it seems to work.

Any experience with this?

Worst case scenario, I get some in my food and am a little loose.

I use it on all my carbon steel blades. Easy to apply, non-toxic. Also good for burns, scrapes, chapped lips, etc.

Hey David,

I have a pair of machetes that are about ten years old now and that's all I've ever used on them. I guess ten years is considered as long-term, huh? Anyways, I just go down to the local 'Dollar Store' and buy the generic stuff. For a dollar, you get a large 32 oz. jar of petroleum jelly. I would just goop it up and down the blade before storage. It's been workin' just fine all these years inhibiting rust! And when I do use the machetes, I don't even bother wiping them off first if it's just for whacking and clearing brush. It's actually smoother whacking and easier clean-up with the petroleum jelly left on.
