pewter bands ?

I want to add pewter bands to my tomahawk handles but I'm not sure how deep I should make the groove in the wood.. How deep is too deep? I don't want to weaken the handle so much that it will break if it is used a little.

Personally I would say 1/10 of the diameter (i.e. 1" across make the depth .1" deep cut).

Louis I go about 1/8 inch on my handles. That gives you plenty of room for clean up and sanding

I carve them 1/8 to 3/16 depending on the size of haft.
