Aight which of you bizatches complain about a heavy blade for treking and camping/backpacking when your azzes weigh 20 lbs or more than they should?:D

I don't complain about blade weight and have always carried big blades in my packs. 8 extra ounces just makes no difference to me when I can loose 10 pounds off my azz. So don't whine about blade weight when your weight is too high.:D

Tony G can relate right? How many times has Tony as well as myself heard someone complain about their 20 lb bike being too heavy and they go around riding with 30 extra pounds on their gut.

Let's see some pics of all of us to see how much extra weight we carry. Pic of you on a motorcyle or bike or something:D

I have NO issues with Weight! I don't always have a BIG knife but I often have several. This is my 98CBR900RR with Michigans Lake Huron in the background. I did not have any Busse's last summer but I have em for this summer. BIGBOYZ can go FAST!!!!

Amen and pass the sauce. I never could understand all the fervor with which most of the online Ducati community pursued the replacement of their OEM gear with the latest and greatest Ti and CF doodads. Please. Drop twenty pounds of a$$ and your performance will improve by a much greater factor.

you know, if I was going for a hike of a month or longer I would worry about the weight of the blade, as well as everything else, that I am carrying. I mean, lets face it, all you really NEED in the woods is something like a mora.

That being said, I routinely carry around 20lbs of crap (I call it gear!) nearly everywhere I go including my SFNO (it goes everywhere with me, even if my other Busse knives do get jealous) and the weight doesn't bother me in the slightest. The only way I'd ever worry about the weight of my knife is when I'm trying to knock 10 lbs of my pack weight. Theres areal big difference between carrying 70 and 80lbs on your back and for a long trip those ounces add up.

Did anyone catch the story about the guy in California that got mauled by a Mountain lion? Bet he wishes he had a FBM!!!!!!:)

Ewe gotta be kidding! (GROAN!)

I agree. I keep thinking if I drop 20, I can carry a 30lb pack and it'll seem like 10. It SEEMS logical.

With similar logic to the OP, I better put down my Pepper Shaker. Or, at least, I have the right to complain about its weight. I've never yet managed to get my weight up to anywhere close to normal for my height. I'm ~40 pounds underweight, and this is pretty close to the heaviest I've ever achieved.

Seriously, though, I think there really is substance (or should I say gravitas;) ) to your point. I'm always surprised when someone carefully shaves every last milligram from their pack weight, while not taking off any of the few dozen extra pounds on their bodies.

I do a lot of adventuring where pack weight matters to me, and I do count ounces. I'm a scrawny weakling, and I often need to carry one or even two score pounds of camera gear, in addition to backpacking gear. It adds up. That said, it's both true that I consider the weight of the knife when choosing which to bring on big adventures, and true that I often choose a big knife.

Cobalt, I cant even type straight about this topic...it pisses me off so much.....if you want a thin light knife that is fine, but to complain about the weight of X knive vs XX knife is just ridiculous. Those few precious ounces aren't going to kill your out of shape a$$. Instead of spending so much time typing ...go to the gym, do some push ups or at least sit at your desk with a free weight and lift it a bit. A day in the woods, I would carry Fbm, a week in the woods I would carry a FBM.....I hate listening to whiny folks complining about the weight of their knives....if you had a job in a sugarcane field chopping for 14 hours straight.....a FBM might not be what you need, but for woods, it would certainly be much more than a Mora....ever try to chop a tree with one? Not saying they aren't great knives, as there is no one perfect knife....only the one perfect for YOUR needs. But to complain about the weight of the knife....what are you expecting.....it is 1/4" thick and 16.5" long...what do you really expect?!

LOL, exactly....

Hey, those poor little Nepali Sherpas never complain about lugging tons of weight up mountains for the Americans and Europeans who want to say they climbed a mountain, but never admit they could not have done it without the sherpas who are half their size and carry twice as much.

The Sherpas are something else. 120lbs of gear over an 18,000foot mountain pass, while setting line. No thanks!

Does anyone know what kind of knife the Sherpas commonly carry?

well if they didn't have to lug stuff for everyone else they would probably carry a Khukuri as that is what the standard tool is over there.
Even their little women lug that big heavy tool around. I guess their women are tougher than most american men who whine about big blades :D

Wouldn't surprise me at all if they are, Cobalt. My ang khola (drinking early, its the dui chirra that is the big boy I have) is the heaviest and thickest blade I own. My only point about weight is for truly long trips. If you have to carry two or four weeks worth of food on your back pretty much everything else is secondary and the benefits must be weighed. damnit, I made a pun. or irony. or something.

I can carry 70lbs all day but 80lbs starts to get rough pretty quick. But more likely than not, I'll save the weight elsewhere and keep a larger blade with me.

edit: I have taken trees down with a mora too. Small trees. In all honesty, I have no need to cut down large trees while hiking/camping. The only large trees I take are the non natives on the property around my nursery. And for that, I've got a chain saw if my arm starts getting tired! :D

Right on Cobalt. I'm with you all the way on this one bro. As many here are. In fact I'm hoping for a chopper bigger, badder, and heavier than the FBM. (Is that possible?)

I appreciate this post, even more so knowing that you have some extra weight that you are carrying and would love to cut loose but can't. (shrapnel) If anyone has any complaining to do it is Jason, yet he never says a word about it. A big 2-thumbs up for you and your post.
