I'm checking out these Pheer grinders on eBay. The 1.5 hp motor says 3450rpm. Does this matter with a VFD? From my searching forums the desired motors are the 1700ish rpm motors. Also, curious what speed is best for what part of the knife making process? May be personal preference.

The nice thing about a VFD is that you can basically go from 0 to 3450, and that includes 1700ish. Some guys will start with the 1700 and overspeed the motor to get more RPMs, and some just start with it already.

Sometimes faster is nice for hogging material a bit quicker, but most of your work will probably be at a medium speed. Either way, with a VFD, you have options.

People go with 1700 motor for the torque they have over the 3450 variant

When using a VFD, at low to mid speeds the torque is not an issue as max power is not used. At higher to max speeds the torque is about the same on both motors. If using a 3-step pulley setup, then 1725 rpm motor is a must because it's so hard to slow the 3450 rpm motor enough for slow speed work, but then the max speed is low for "hogging" work.

GET THE VFD!!! You will never regret getting the VFD.

I have the Pheer and love it! Get the VFD for sure. Years ago I was on the fence between a VFD and a pulley arrangement. What had me on the fence is that my leather stitching machine has 12 speeds (a rotary switch with stops) but that I never seemed to use more than 3 or 4 of those speeds. Ed Caffery told me he'd never hear of anyone going from a VFD to pulleys but he'd hear of lots of folks going from pulleys to VFDs. Ed was right.
