Pheer PH427 or a KMG 3 Speed?

Hey guys I was not going to responded to this thread but its time. Stan what is this vibration you are talking about with the Esteem you used you metioned nothing about this in your response to my pm to you. A little back ground here guys I sent Stan a pm yesterday asking him what thought made the Esteem not as good as the KMG and what he did not like about the Esteem he had used. I did this looking for feedback on what others thought and to make sure there was no specific problems with the Esteem he had used.

I would like to post his reply back to me and my original PM to him to this thread but I will wait to see if he is ok with it.

Stan do you mind if I post are pms to each other on here.

Brett, your esteem grinder looks very nice. Where can other folks get some detailed info when doing some comparison shopping. I have hear that mentioned before regarding the lake of info besides some posts in this forum. Keep making awesome metal eating goodies.

Hey guy's I bought an Esteem from Brett with all bells and whistles. I got an extra arm for every tool he makes for it. I was dead set on getting a KMG and noticed the Esteem. I still haven't had much time to play with it but there haven't been any issues at all. I've also briefly used a KMG and the only thing I have seen different is the Esteem runs a lil quieter. The thing is also built like a tank. Brett did a great job. I promised Brett I would put up a full review but I just haven't had enough time on the machine. I moved and haven't set it up in my new place yet.

If anyone is having a vibration issue it may be due to 2 different things. 1. It might not be set up on a secure base. 2. It might not be put together the right way. That goes for any Grinder.

Those are the only things I can think of off the top of my head that might cause a vibration.

My two cents...KMG is the highest quality and worth the money. Later you will want it if you settle now. If you are serious about knife making then you will want a KMG or a Bader at some point IMHO. Oh and get the 2 hp motor and a Kbac 27-d.

The Esteem looks to be built better than the Pheer .the Wilmont would be another good choice. The KMG is a solid work horse and will last for ever but I don't like the belts and pulleys. Since prices have come down on VFD's it doesn't make since to go that way. I can build one cheaper with direct drive and VFD than with the jack shaft crown pulleys and belt.

For what it's worth, I will vouch for Jim here. His Grinder is designed very similar to the KMG but with direct drive which seems like a major advantage to me. Less parts to break, easier power delivery, less maintenance, etc...

And if solid is what you want, I can't imagine anything more solid than this thing. Granted, I've never spent any time on a KMG but from what I've read and all the pictures, I can't see any way in which it is more beefy than Jim's Angle Pro Grinder. Let's put it this way: I'm 28 years old, 6'2" 225lbs and workout regularly- I had some serious trouble picking the thing up and moving it. This hog leg weighs so much it would be silly to bolt it down to anything.

But the real value lies in the attachments and the VFD. For $200 less than the basic vfd equipped KMG, Jim's grinder comes with a 10" wheel arm, a flat platten arm with a work table, a small wheel arm, a built in "Christmas Tree" that holds everything, AND one of Jim's Angle Pro Jigs that is quickly becoming the hottest new tool in knife making.

The closest thing you can get is the KMG-10 ($2028.50) which still needs a small wheel arm ($83 attachment + $60 wheel + $80 arm). That's $651.50 ($451.50 if you get fancy anodized wheels) more than Jim's! For what? A name?

Now THAT's a lot of belts and steel!!!

Finally, Jim is a top notch guy. He is a personal friend of mine and I am not getting anything for this other than the joy of knowing I'm promoting a great product built by a good man.

It looks like you've already made up your mind on the KMG, Jeymeister, but I would give this new option some serious consideration.
