I would not think of Phil Coggan's work per se, but that is EXCELLENT sculpting. I've seen some of Joe Rundell's engraving that is similar style to that.

Well done! Thanks for posting it.

It is very nice work I must try this chinese method. I would very much like to see a close up shot of the working ends of your chisels. thank you

Thansks, D, Call me Charles.
Im so happy hear that you want have a try on the chinese traditional carving. This is very few keeping untill today.
Here are a few photos for your view. may be the photos are not clear. i will show you better one later.

Sorry, i just found the photos you want was not in my laptop. i will post later.

Your carving looks nice, but why are you knocking off Phils work? It is ok to be influenced by the masters, however copying line per line is disrespectful and shows little artistic expression on your part.

Thank you charles I will show you my first try. It will help to have the pic when I make the tools I have a lot of the same tools for hot work so I think i may only need to make about 20 new tools. Brain at times it helps to copy a master before moving on to do your own masterpiece.

Thanks, Brian, I do not agree with you.

Below is what im going to clear.

First, it's just one try the western pattern by the chinese traditional metal carving method. i just want to verify, whether the traditional rough tooling can reach the similar effect of Phils work or not.
if you ask this questions, why you prefer the Phils's work, because i love it, it is very beautiful. i respect Phils. also love his work very much. even i did not carving well. but it's my new trying. not means Phils lose face....

Second, this is not a action for the business. i did not copy it for the guns, gain a profit. just save it as teaching material. that's it.

Third, if this try will be a disrespectful for Phils, i will say sorry to him in private. if he also think so. I can not help it . i will stop it.

Anyway, thanks very much your comments Brian, i know may be you are one like me. respect Phils's work.

Thanks D,
It's really a happy you can put it into action. i am sure you can do that. expect to see your works. there will be one more crats man in the team of traditional metal carving.

Your carving looks very good, but I was wondering what do you mean by "chinese traditional metal carving method"? What is the difference between "western", if there is something like that, and Chinese methods?

As I can see from the photos, you are also using hammer and chisel. But so does Phil for all of his carving/sculpting work...

Xie xie nin, thank you.

For the chinese traditinal metal carving, i mean, this is a very old carving in China at least, hear from my our grandfather's grandfather. that's all, not much else.
Im not a researcher. :D I do not know well the history of the crafts. haha, just a smith.

In fact, this kind of traditional carving mothod are seen from the oversea, like the Japan, the USA. and other places. but very few people keeping it until now.

Yes, I only used the hammers and chisels, and it is full hand hold. not the electric hold. not the air operated, which most of the people used now. that's the only difference i want to say. thanks.

And for Pills work, he used a kind of chisels as below, airgraver, photos attached. may be im wrong. pls let me know. xie xie.
