if you see what you want from him , dont think twice

My mistake, ups did some brokerage fee so they can make some extra dough for some speedy shipping which i really didnt need.

Phil's a great guy, hes helping me sort this out on his own time

I felt kind of bad when Aaron was so quick to compliment me. It turned out that the person who signed for his package had to pay a substantial fee. I went to my shipper, paid for simple UPS ground, declared the item as a gift (they told me this would mean Aaron's mother, the recipient of the package, would not have to pay taxes on the package), and sent the thing off without giving it a second thought.

I called my shipper when Aaron contacted me and they told me UPS calls the fee he ended up paying a "CD Brokerage fee," something listed on the receipt under "import tax." I was never told by my shipper that this was a possibility. I've never had to ship anything IN to Canada before, either, so I suspect this is ignorance on my part as much as anything else.

UPS charges an exorbitant fee for doing the customs clearance. A fee similar to what you would have to pay a customs broker. When shipping to Canada, it is best to use USPS Express or Priority. Canada Post only charge a $5.00 fee for doing paperwork and that is only when there are duties and/or taxes that need to be paid.

If something is imported into Canada as a gift, the amount that is tax free is $60.00CND. If the item is $100.00US, the value is first converted to Canadian dollars, which would be $140.00. As a gift the first $60.00 is tax free, but GST is charged on the other $80.00. At 7% that would only be $5.60. Add the $5.00 Canada Post charges and you have a modest $10.60 fee that must be paid to get your package. I am not sure what UPS's minmum charge is, but when I got my BladeForums T-shirt (which was shipped via UPS) I paid about $22.00 in fees for a $25.00 shirt. Not only do they charge you for doing the Customs declaration, but they also pay your taxes upfront for you and then you have to pay them back along with a fee for lending you the money.

Bah... UPS,,, oh well.. life gives ya lemons , ya make lemonade... ill email them because i really didnt care if i had it in a hurry or not.

Aaron,

If I sell something in the future in which you have interest, let me know. As far as I'm concerned you have an open credit with me.
