Phill Hartsfield TONBOKIRI KATANA (VIDEO) Merry X Mas

Dragonflies are the baddest bugs on the planet, yet effortlessly elegant - it's a fitting name and theme for such a sword, I say. :)

Excellent! Thanks for all the contributions to the forum and the enthusiasm for custom bladesmithing! I only know you through your forum posts, but I have really enjoyed those, and the results of your various collaborations.

By the way, you probably already know (almost certainly, so forgive me but I think I should mention this) that Michael Bell has the Dragonfly School of Swordsmithing (or something like that - I can't translate from Japanese very well). The dragonfly is a common theme.

I think their larvae are the true badasses, but I don't know as much about the adult form (I studied Aquatic Biology a long time ago, and remember these little alien hunter killer creatures just massacring small fish. They were scary through the scope).

thanks for all that you do for custom bladesmithing. Though you don't know me, I am grateful.

Merry Christmas!

Thank you Kevin

You will find this amusing :)

I know Michael from a million years ago and he was the first to make me a sword named Tonbokiri :)

It is a magnificent sword and one that will be featured someday in its own video

Really is amazing how small the world is in these circles

Merry X Mas and thank you again for the kind words

What a thing of beauty.

You are privileged to own this and to have been a friend of the late mister Hartsfield, R.I.P - let alone having asked him to make not one but several blades.
You may lament his passing, but think of it this way; You met encountered Phil Hartsfield, when you were young and you knew him. Thats a privilege few of us will have.

To me, having a blade made to commemorate the birth of a daughter is a momentous thing - as it no doubt is to you. Having a blade made by a man whom you obviously respect just makes everything better.

I hope Belle treasures the blade for ever.

As for the Katana itself, there is no doubt in my mind that the longer tsuka no doubt works better than a shorter handle for the exact reasons you state. One can practically see it in the video.

If thats rusty sword handling, Id hate to have met you in a dark alley with that sword (S&W or no S&W) :D

neat stuff, Joe. That is one badass sword for sure.

Every stage of the Dragonfly life is full-on badassery, a predator of predators, like an Orca! Several decades ago the Air Force tried - and failed - to make an aircraft that could mimic the way a dragonfly moves through the air, which is unique and lets it move pretty much in any direction, while in any orientation, no matter what. With their superior flight movements, they catch and eat other insects like plucking ripe fruit from a tree. It would be like an attack helicopter that could hover or move in any direction even it if was vertical or upside-down.

Very cool info Mecha

Makes me feel better when people make fun of all my Dragonfly Tatoos :)

Mecha,

Methinks the Apache is the closest they could get.

There you have it: Dragonflies are the bug equivalent of an AH64 Apache, not to be trifled with.

Thanks, Joe....always a pleasure to see your collection and videos....Merry Christmas to you and yours my friend.
