I have a western handled custom chef's knife from a very respected maker that was experiencing some handle shrinkage, the result being that the spine of the knife felt very obvious and distracting in use. After trying unsuccessfully to contact the original maker, I asked Phillip if he would be willing to take on the job of putting some nice micarta handles on the knife. He accepted and after some questions back and forth, I sent the knife his way.
I received the knife back yesterday and I am extremely pleased with the end result. The scales are symmetrical with just the right amount of thickness. Their shape is very comfortable in hand/use and of course, I can't begin to feel the transition between the scales and spine.
It obviously was not a big project and Phillip did not make the knife. Had he done merely an adequate job on the handles, nobody would have been the wiser; Phillip's name is not on the knife anywhere. He instead did an exceptional job on the handles. He was professional, highly competent, turned the knife around in 10 days (that includes shipping btw), and IMO treated the job as though he had made the knife himself.
All in all, it was an outstanding experience from an outstanding maker.
