Philly cop plunges into the river... knife-wielding rescuer arrives too late. :(

Rule #9 Always carry a knife, you never know when it can save a life.

Thats a sad story.

I know several officers who carry their knife discreetly clipped to their front pants pocket under their holster. Its a good place, as its out of sight. I used to carry my knife there too. Only problem is that its hard to reach, when sitting in a patrolcar. Add a car accident ending underwater and it would be near impossible to get out.

I have since switched positions to my strong-side cargo pant or my shirt breast pocket.

RIP Officer Stephen Naughton and respect to those who dove in after him.

That's such a shame.. and goes to show that you need a knife on you all the time..

One of my buddies told me a similar story, about when he was in the army, they were doing some training, when a helicopter went down, so they all dropped the packs, and ran to try to help the people inside, then they realized the needed a knife to cut one of the guys out, and all their knives were in the packs they dropped, by the time they retrieved it and got back, the pilot had died

Wow, what can one say about such a sad and tragic story? My heart goes out to the fallen officer and his family.

What a sad story. If more people thought of a knife as a tool instead of a weapon, they may be more inclined to carry one. Very sad indeed.

I'm a bit confused-- is there a reason to carry a knife discreetly when you're carrying a gun in plain sight?

Some officers dont want to carry one in plain sight, because they might not be allowed to carry it if, its not issued by their department.

Another reason is, that the bad guy might reach for it under a fight and use it against the officer. Alot of issued holsters have double or triple retention systems to prevent the bad guy pulling out the officers gun. You cant secure a knife the same way, therefore some reason its best to keep it out of sight.

Interesting, thanks.
