Phishing email

I just got a phishing email supposedly from PayPal notifying me that their account security team noticed suspicious attempts to enter my PayPal account. It said my account was "Limited" as a security measure and I could click on the link to restore my account to full usability. Needless to say, when I examined the html source the link went to some site owned by a guy named Marco at unique-world.com.

I have reported the attempted theft of my identity to spoof@paypal.com

Just a friendly reminder to all the forumites always to be suspicious of any emails like this.

Those come regularly. Obviously you were bright enough to not fall for such an obvious scam, but not everyone is so lucky.

I doubt your identity has been stolen though. Likely, your e-mail address is the only information the scammers have.

I got a couple of those before I even had a PayPal account, so I think Bob is right. They are just tossing out a line and seeing who bites.

Oh yeah, they don't own my account at all. It was just phishing. They probably don't even know whether or not I have a PayPal account - they just broadcast the email and see who responds.

It was a particularly nice one, though, with html lifted right off the PayPal site, no misspellings or clumsy Engrish, and containing links to legitmate PayPal pages. I kept the email, which was in html, as a text file if anyone wants to look at it - I don't like to circulate that kind of stuff but if somone has a legitimate interest just let me know and I can let you have it.

I assume it also did not use your name, as real payPal stuff does.

Correct. Contrary to PayPal policy, it did not address me by name.

My risk was zero, but a good reminder is worth the bandwidth.

I love the PayPal ones because.... well.... because I don't have a PayPal account in the first place!

I also get a lot of 'em for Well Fargo bank and Sun Trust Bank. I used to forward them to PayPal and Well Fargo and Sun Trust, but they never even wrote back (at least anything except an obviously automated response) to even acknowledge much less thank me.

I'm helping them protect their good name. The least they can do is thank me.
