That is an impressive blade, your skills never cease to amaze me Bookie. It is drop dead gorgeous. Cant wait to see ole Bawanna's scales on it as well. Got to start hanging around here some more, I miss my Amigos.

PUGS!!! Man I thought the beavers done dragged you under the dam for some yuman skin sheaths or sumpin:eek: Glad your OK! We do miss you! Hope your doin well mi Amigo!

But, but, but, bowies are illegal in Texas........I didn't think anything was illegal in Texas but of all the things in the whole wide world they outlaw Bowies. How sad is that.

I hate to be a rain cloud on your parade but I wouldn't want to send you a hacksaw blade in a cake in the big house ya know?
Bowies illegal in Texas???? That's like Hawaii outlawing pineapples!!!!
Guess I'm blessed living in wild west Arizona - state law makes it illegal to restrict knives. ARS 13-3120: "a political subdivision of this state shall not enact any ordinance, rule or tax relating to the transportation, possession, carrying, sale, transfer, purchase, gift, devise, licensing, registration or use of a knife or knife making components in this state." http://www.azleg.state.az.us/FormatDocument.asp?inDoc=/ars/13/03120.htm&Title=13&DocType=ARS

Supposedly the Bowie ban came about as a means of stopping people from dueling, and dirks and daggers are included in the ban. As for the Arizona law, that looks like a preemption law. The state can ban knives, but only the state government can. Political subdivisions, e.g. cities, neighborhoods, counties, etc cannot.

That is correct, Arizona state law preempts local jurisdictions from restricting knives whatsoever. Since the state government hasn't banned any blades, all are legal.

Current Arizona laws interpret pretty literally the declaration of rights in AZ state constitution AC-2-26: "The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself or the state shall not be impaired" http://www.azleg.gov/FormatDocument.asp?inDoc=/const/2/26.htm

Interestingly nunchaks are only hand/melee weapon 'prohibited' in AZ. I'm sure like the Bowie dueling in Texas there must be some incident in state history that singled out nunchaks to get banned???

There are nunchaks and then there are NUMBCHUCKS! The most fearsome thing to come along since a methane filled hog confinement building. They tried to ban'em in Corn Patch, but each time one of them crooked legislators tries it....WHAPPO! No witnesses. No clues. All they can find are kernels of pop corn layin' about. Yessir, thems Corn Patch Numb-chucks.

As I recall we had similar weapons of mass destruction in Missoura. Hogs too. Lots of em.

Must be in a canyon or something, seems to be an echo around here.

Forging a guard for Alan's Bowie has been a trial X 12, to say the least. It has been failure after failure for this fat boy, but today SUCCESS! It took a few hours of very diligent work and hammering, many, many heats, and I pulled out all stops--I held my tongue just so...and it worked! This guard was hand forged, and I did not use a casting. I recently had a nasty accident with one of my samurai swords. After polishing it with 12,000 grit (this means extra sharp) it slid from the saya as I was moving it and it went through the bottom of my hand. A little over 2.5 CM deep. No pain. Very little blood. Lucky me. This is why you see a glove on my right hand. The owwie was throbbing a tad. But, I am now happier than a pig in slop. I had ruined all my brass and bronze, so it was back to using up this old bronze bearing I had annealed earlier. Took a chunk about 6" long, heated it up and started pounding--with a smaller hammer. Here are a few bland pics of today's play time in fire.
The bearing.

This will give you a reasonable facsimile of how it is to look when completed. Sort of.

Need to do the slot next, fit it, then shape/polish the guard body, and then mail'er to Bawanna for scaling.

Wooohooo!! always nice when a plan comes together. But be careful Bac Si, when you start talking about polishing with Chromium Oxide at 0.5 micron size grit (12000 US equivalent grit) you are discussing the type of sharp that lets you cut yourself and only notice when you faint from blood loss :D

I am loving the looks of that blade. I can't wait to see what Bawanna has planned to gild that lily.

You never went sleeveless when we met. I would have had a closer look at that tattoo. Its looking good to me.

Shavru--working with .3 micron on plastic. This will be the final grit.

Alan--Thanks for the kind words. Detailing the guard today.
