to lighten up too shadowy of areas, you can make a reflector with a bit of cardboard and some aluminum foil.
You could always make a light box, and then it is hard to take bad pictures. (or at least your color will be good)

Rob or Rat, give it to me straight guys. I just bought my first digital camera a Nikon Coolpix S9500 and I'm flummoxed by its complexity already but I can learn. If I rig up a light box can I get the kind of detail that Rat is showing using that camera or do I have to bite the bullet and trade it in for an SLR? The Coolpix doesn't seem that much better than my IPad.
Is it just my incompetence?
Problem is I'd really hate to have to lug around an SLR but I'm getting bored that even my best pics with the iPad look like they were done using oil paints.
