Using Photobucket or similar operations is a convenience but it should not be used as sole storage. I think everyone would be wise to have all of their photos stored on their computer or on an external storage device. Switching from Photobucket to something like Imgur may just be a delaying tactic until other hosting operations follow Photobucket.

Exactly.......
There may be such a thing as a free lunch.......but they'll all eventually make you pay.

Thanks to Thurin for pointing out...
Whelp...if you are using..
Using IMGUR is a risk!

I have been seeing a lot of people stating that they use it and will be using it to post photos to forums. As Thurin points out, the Imgur TOS specifically mention this
http://imgur.com/tos

Stuff not to do
If someone else might own the copyright to it, don't upload it. Don't upload gore, "hate speech" (i.e. demeaning race, gender, age, religious or sexual orientation, etc.), or material that is threatening, harassing, defamatory, or that encourages violence or crime. Don't upload illegal content such as child porn or nonconsensual ("revenge") porn. Don't hotlink to adult content or to file-sharing, gambling, torrent, warez, or Imgur rip-off sites. Don't impersonate someone else. Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network. If you do – and we will be the judge – or if you do anything illegal, in addition to any other legal rights we may have, we will ban you along with the site you're hotlinking from, delete all your images, report you to the authorities if necessary, and prevent you from viewing any images hosted on Imgur.com. We mean it.

With the influx of ex-Photobucket users using Imgur to link photos to forums, I'll bet the bandwidth spike will be enough to draw some attention.

You know I wouldn't mind paying, say $30 a year to PB, if you could opt out of the ads, but to slap us with a $400 fee to rescue our photos seems a little too much like a ransom. Trying to spit the sour PB taste out of my mouth. 300Bucks

I agree with you Craig, I was preparing to go with the ad free level on PB but now I am just done. My account, while still open, has been emptied. I would rather pay $30 more to BF to host my images here permanently, the gold membership level of 2MB is not enough. The problem with 3rd party hosting is it only lasts as long as the host, or the subscriber. I am altruistic enough that I would like for any worthwhile contributions I have made to this forum to continue after my participation ends. It would be nice if all our contributions could continue as a permanent part of the forum. Just to pick one example, hkingdom's past images are no longer there.... too bad, he had a lot of extraordinary stuff.

I realize they have to make a profit but I wished I would have received a email saying they are going to start charging a fee and this is what it will be and it will start in two months. I had only used 11% per cent of my PB storage space so wasn't to much of a threat. Just feel they haven't earned the recommendations we made for years to people starting out posting photos to use PB. Where is the person that in the company that is assigned to show helpful compassion to clients. 300Bucks

My account, while still open, has been emptied...
I think it's premature to empty your PB account, especially if you have a lot of content. You have made certain that your links are forever broken. PB has lost my respect but if they change their policies, at least my past links will be up again. I don't see the sense in removing your images. Even out of spite... if anything, max out your free membership limit to bog them down. You've only succeeded in freeing up space and saving them money in storage.

I'd rather pay ten forums $40 a year than $400 to PB. Forum admins should rate pictures - important "how to" or identification pictures should be stored without going against a member's limit, and should remain if the member quits. So in effect they become forum property. Items like "look at my knife" (or car or fish or dog) would count against a user's limit.

Your comment is true and makes me regret it but being PO'd at the loss of 7 years of posting images here got the better of me. It may be awhile before I post images here again while waiting for the options to sort out. 2MB on this site is no where adequate. Jumping to other sites may just well be kicking the can down the road. I'm not convinced Imgur is all that safe nor do they want to become a host for 3rd party images.... Read this statement from Imgur..

Yes, I know others here are using Imgur but suspect low volume stays under the radar, a sudden migration of people from PhotoBucket is sure to drop the hammer....

I think all the Auto, Home, Hobby, Collector, and How-To forum administrators need to think real hard about the value of the image content and become proactive about hosting it themselves ( if technically and $$$ possible) It is just as valuable as the text content as they work in concert. Some hosting company goes belly up or a hobbiest becomes inactive or kicks the bucket and content is lost.

I am going to close this thread and get back to talking about Buck knives.

Sorry, DeSotoSky... this may be pouring salt in the wound but.... You actually didn't lose the images. They still linked to your Photobucket and anyone who right clicked on them would get a direct link to the pic on the PB url. Slightly more tedious but at least they would see them.
