Hey Jim
The only advice I have after a couple hundred shots with my cheapie digital cam is take some pics outside in bright, direct sunlight. Move yourself around in about 180 degrees with the sun on your back. Take them inside and load them on your pc and take a look. After only a few trips you will learn the best angles and distances... you can take some amazingly detailed and clear pics this way....
