Photos Of Damascus KLO Seen On H.I.'s Forum Recently...

Vince Evans was on a PBS(?) show a while ago, I think. Showed him making a steel billet. Very impressive (to me, anyway).

My mistake, JP. Was a nice piece though. Glad it found a buyer.

That kothimora was had a reserve of over $1500 and was taken out of auction after I received an offer from an overseas buyer.

Any links so I can see it would be appreciated. What do you think of the khukuri shown above? Thanks, John.

sure was nice though! (should mention that it had gold fittings on it...:D - not damascus, though)

Maybe I should have you make me one in Damascus with gold fittings, Dan. :D

In short, yes. That's what we call it here in this forum. Any knifemaker making a khukuri-shaped knife is welcome to call whatever he/she wants. But out of respect for the kamis and the blessing process, we refer to all non-kami-made khukuris as KLOs.

At least that's the explanation I have floating around in my head.

Antique khukuris are not KLOs.....!

H.I. Forumites, and khukuri affecionados commonly use "KLO" (Khukuri Like Object) when describing khukuris not made in Nepal. It is not necessarily a derogatory term, and the ultra high quality knife made by Vince Evans would be welcome by any forumite, including yours truly. :)

It's just a way to distinguish a traditionally made Nepali khukuri, and one that oftentimes uses high tech steels, highly controlled heat differential treatments, and exotic handle and furniture materials.

I like em' both! :)

I think the real kukri is interesting and the watered blade raises it above the norm. The grip designs are not uncommon. The KLO is certainly a beautiful piece of work, but the shape doesn't capture the spirit of a true kukri to me.

The "palace" kothimora sold is 2nd from the left.

It IS beatiful, but I get more of a feeling of Cold Steel than Kathmandu.

Nice kothimoda scabbard! The workmanship is oftentimes exquisite, as it apprears to be on this one. Being that this khukuri's blade was said to be gold mounted, one could surmise that it was especially well made and appointed. Gotta love them kothimodas!
