MOS, I probably would have given you and Timi there (who seeks some kind of sociological aspect) a very reasonable explanation to your question, were it not for the manner in which the questions were asked. I take no offense. Though I would suggest that perhaps as you age in life, you'll come to realize there are more than a couple of answers to questions like why would anyone buy a potato knife if not to use.

There are only five people who need to, and do, know the answer to that question, two of whom are named Carothers, one Lorien and one Justin. Thanks for your inquiry. Seek your answers from them, Grasshopper.

Sorry — I thought I was pretty clear that my intent was not to disparage you, either directly or obliquely. I was just genuinely curious. Still am. Totally your prerogative not to indulge that curiosity, but please don't take offense where none is intended.

No offense taken, honestly. What I really wanted to do was go sociological on you with a bunch of hokey explanations, but life is too short, LOL. We're cool.

I love hokey explanations, for what it's worth [emoji106]

Alright.

Bob is putting together a reference collection of Nathan's work. One of every pattern and as you can see a couple that were never patterns at all.

As you can also see, these are intended to be in as shipped condition. Never used. Reference.

Down the road, many years from now if there was no record of Nathan's early work, it would be the subject of much curious wonder and speculation. Bob thinks Nathan is extremely talented and has a bright future ahead of him in the industry so took it upon himself to undertake this role as historian if you will.

If you are wondering why Bob would do this, I suggest just as I would for anyone who you are curious of their motives, pay attention to their avatar, titles and maybe look up threads they have started or posts they have made to see what they are up to.

Obviously you guys see he has knives that were never for sale to the public. And those knives were intended to be tools for the most part so why would Nathan do this? Not to brag about Bob, but he is the kind collector many knifemakers would go to extreme lengths to have in their corner. I think Nathan is happy to have a patron like Bob doing what he is and once you guys figure out who Bob is, you will understand why Nathan has accommodated him in this fashion.

Hope I said enough without saying too much.

No matter the reasons, I have enjoyed following along Mr. Betzner. Rough as I am myself, I can and do appreciate the taste in blades.

I think I will try and remember to resurrect that dagger post three or four times a year, for new arrivals to the subforum. I try to do the same with another dagger maker as well, though in another subforum.

No question but that Nathan's dagger is a thing to behold because it is literally perfect.

Ah, the disabilities of textual communications. The above comments certainly were not intended to be anything but jestful. Nathan knows I specifically attempt to avoid contacting him or Jo because they already have so much on their plate.

Bob, I fully understood that your post was in jest. I think that I fully demonstrated "the disabilities of textual communications" in this case. Or maybe just plain disability - on my part 😬. Mike

Fair enough. I was just stating a fact, not making fun or trying to. I see he's a collector, which many are (even if not to his extent), just personally never thought of buying a kitchen knife I wouldn't use. But now that you mention the historical perspective I get it.

Hey, ya get hit with a post that you too quickly react negatively to, the result is the kind of post I shot your way. As I look back on it, I think if the situation were reversed, I would have been thinking exactly the same thing, why the hell would anyone buy a kitchen knife if not to be used. And in fact, I cannot for the life of me think why I would, LOL.

I am totally impressed with the grinds, fit and finish, and the insanely sharp edge on the FK! ---

Now, I'm REALLY hoping to score a LC and a SK around Christmas!
