I love knives.
I love pics of knives.
I play with Adobe PhotoShop 6 like some folks play video games. As you learn new techniques of course you want to try them out.

This first illustration was done after last year's Blade Show. I was trying to capture one of my happiest moments in time.

I still like the style and look of this pic, but when I was trying out some new techniques I decided to use the same elements for a new composition. It's a bit more Hi-tech, and I tried to give it a lot of depth as well as make the knife stand out more.

Your comments are welcome and thanks for looking.

Yup, definetly more high-tech Phil but still a great pic. Those pronghorns are soooo beautiful.I have managed to get myself on that long waiting list. Now I will just have to grow some patience.:)

Phil has become a photoshop guru right before our eyes.
Awesome.

Here's one I did all in PS 6, nothing borrowed from any real pics.

I don't really care for hollow grinds on a Bowie, but it really seemed to look good. ;)

Phil: You have the touch, absolutely beautiful, all of them. We just bought a Nikon cool pix 995 The manual has more words than the manual I got with my John Deer 4320. Angie has read it, I also, still havent taken any photos. You are talkng from on high to toddlers, your ability is awsome. Congratulations
Ed
PS. Phil,
I am NOT often at a loss for words----but that is just toooo much!!! I love it---and cannot even respond properly. We still have the 2 great pics you did for Ed hanging in the living room---over Ed's computer!!! I crack up all the time...one has those star "things" in it---just GREAT!!!!
YOU are the master of this computer "stuff"!!! WOW---and THANKS!!!!!

...but 'Ed Fowler' in Marquee glitter??? :D :D  :D :D

Ed's gone Vegas! :D

Thanks for the inspirations. Great improvement! Phil sends me a link now and then to some of the greatest PS tutorials. There's just not enough time in a day!

great stuff as usual Phil. Someday I'll learn some of that. Just need a reason I guess.

Ed & Angie--I'd like to stop by when we head west in Sept.

With the N 995, while it is a big manual, you will find that "auto" will suffice for your knife photography needs.

What you will need is a tripod with a Ball & Socket head, not one with the double handles (just easier to work with). Also you will need to get the A/C adapter as you will run thru the batter very quickly.

Last, get a Card Reader (SanDisk is fine) and it will make your d/l's easier and faster.

I'm not using Nikons program but do have the Photoshop LE 5 on the computer. I use ULead Photo Explorer III which I got with another digi/web cam and I do a bit with a free d/l called SlowView. Sometime, I'll try to learn Photoshop LE.

If you want to see some info on image making for knives, there is a thread in CKD Photography called Tent. It might be of some value.

Looking forward to seeing some images in the forums from you.

Well Phil.....if you want my opinion, you got it.....amazing! I thought I knew some tricks?! Back to the drawing board my sorry ass goes....:(

Phil does some neat stuff, one of the better ones around. Tutorials on how he does it will no doubt give you quite a head start on doing your own. However, much of the fun is firing up the computer and going at it. Just try different things, see what all the effects do and dont be afraid to experiment. You can learn alot that way, and the more you do, the easier and faster it becomes.

It also helps of course if you have a natural ability to compose pics like Phil does....I really have to work hard at compostion where Phil just has the touch.

Ed, you will enjoy your camera. The nice thing is you can shoot as many photos as you want and not worry about film expense. Try all different ways and you will find what works for you. As mentioned above, a tripod is a real handy item to have. The ac adapter is a good idea also, however if thats not an option (ie. your outdoors and moving aroud) then try the Energizer E2 litium batteries. I have been using them and they do last alot longer than my rechargables and regular alkaline.

Phil, I can't believe you did that bowie in Photoshop. That is outrageous! Nice work and yes I will be up for the tutorial you are offering :) Thanks!

Dammit Phil.
I saw the last photo just before my lunch - now I'm on a diet :D
When I come home, I'll give Lesson #1 a try - sounds like fun.
Thanks for taking the time to show us how it's done. If you come to Denmark I'll buy you a beer, although it seems you've had your share. :D

I got an e-mail recently from Angie Fowler, she was playing with her new digicam and took a picture of "Leroy the Ranch Rattler".
I was playing with some new techniques I learned and Leroy's pic got me inspired.
