Unfortunately I'm having a difficult time warming up to the Viper. After waiting for what seemed like forever I find myself struggling to like it. I find the OAL of the knife and the long blade just don't work for me as well as I'd hoped. Maybe I hyped it too much. :(

So I would like to see comparisons of OAL open and closed. Also a top down shot to compare thickness would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Brian

Brian,
I find that the OAl of the the knife and the long blade is what I like best. Also the shape works well in my pocket.
I can't give You a comparison photo as I don't own a Case swayback ( yet ).
Give it time, by the time the picnic rolls around, You'll like it more.

Brian, I feel the same. It's too big and the lanyard hole does not help. I just don't think they go well with the pattern. The swayback wharnie is my favorite pattern and I've waited years for this model from GEC, but in the end it just wasn't for me. Sorry, I don't have one to take a picture of (I tried to get one in micarta, but was unable to, and could not make myself go for the other variations). Not to worry, there's plenty of fish in the ocean...

Try a GEC #55 Hound Tooth!

Timberweasel, that's a great suggestion; one I was about to make myself. You beat me to it. The three patterns in your picture are all great patterns, I have them all myself and like them all. The Viper is just a bit big for me for every day carry so I find myself with the SBJ or Gent most of the time. The houndstooth is carried and used just a bit more than the Viper, but they all work for me.

Thanks for the suggestions and pic. I do have a 55 like the one in the pic and a Viper.

Brett I like the look of the sbg in the pic. Is is relatively thin like the 55?

I did own a SBJ and an SBG, and liked both but let them go. I have been thinking that the 73/74 frame on the Viper is too big, maybe something on the 15 size would have been better. I still want to get one though.

Dan congrats on your 18000th post! :D

Did you know GEC is making a wharncliffe blade on the 92 frame? It should be a good one. The 15 frame would be great too.

I've had my eye on the Case Desk Knife for a while now. Looks like a classy little fixed blade.

Holey moley! I need to do another giveaway.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming. I like that desk knife. The 92 looks a little more sleek, better for the SBJ pattern.

The SBG is a shade thinner than the #55 but a very close comparison. Of the three, I think I prefer the #55, overall...

All 3 of those Case are stunning but the middle one is off the charts. Let me guess, all are stainless? Freakin' shame if they are.

Unfortunately I'm having a difficult time warming up to the Viper.

Whenever I have a similar response to a new (or new-to-me) pattern, I recognize the disappointment and then purposefully transition into relief-- because a next pattern will indubitably prove irresistible.

I've learned to be grateful that patterns exist that I don't actually end up Needing. ;)

Yep - all stainless, but, I have the chestnut Swayback Jack in CV and plenty of old Cases in CV. I like either type of steel - in different ways. :)

The middle one with the arrow shield was called deep crimson bone and was pretty hard to find with that rich and deep color.

This is important. When I first joined this forum I wanted everything that I saw. Thankfully the frenzy passed and I have become selective. I love looking at everyone's acquisitions but no longer have the 'grass is always greener' syndrome.
