Pick a knife to live in my kit bag

The question of what you'll have in your pocket on a given day is a good one. A main issue with a SAK or pliers-based MT is they usually have crumby blade steel, although there are exceptions. Always having a primary and often a secondary blade, I just went with a serrated-only Swiss Tool as my regular MT and it's never been an issue. (I bring it up because you are specifically looking at adding a knife.)

My secondary blade is almost always a Dragonfly. It's awesome for what it is, in either regular or Wharncliffe variants. It's so light and easy to add. The base models only run VG10 but that's leaps and bounds better than some of the stuff on your list. They also come in K390 if you don't need corrosion resistance. You can get S30V if you don't mind a pink handle (or doing mods). They also just released some in Micro-Melt, which is an analog of CruWear.

If you can go a little bigger on a fixed blade, the Vosteed Mink in Nitro-V has been my favorite production fixed blade of the year. It's relatively compact and super handy.

Questions for the OP:

- Are you already carrying a knife in your pocket?
- If yes, what kind?
- What knife in your kit bag would best complement the pocket knife?
Yes. Usually a 3-4 inch folder. Sometimes a small fixed.

I'm going to say Skeletool. They don't weigh that much, and they will do anything knife related you need done in such a situation. Having a rudimentary set of tools augments your creativity. The most you can do, the more you can do...if that makes sense. Dropped into parts unknown, I would take even the most basic MT over the most bombproof chopper any day.

Victorinox Huntsman.

The Farmer is my second choice but I have a thing for scissors on my Swiss Army Knives. They’re handy when dealing with first aid items.

The trio of tools I like most on a SAK is file, scissors, saw. It's a relatively rare combination. The big SAKs like the Handyman, Swiss Champ, Work Champ, and Cyber Tool L all have that trio but they're also pretty chunky. So I generally skip those, trade in the tiny pliers, and go right to the Swiss Tool. For a more reasonably sized SAK, the Ranger is it.

From another thread. There is a knife for 10 bucks called the Ozark Trail that is supposed to be serviceable.

If you basically wanted a throwaway.

I prefer the Phillips screwdriver, saw and scissors. The file would be nice too

That knife has taken the internet by storm and is being called the Wugout. The Walmart version of the Bugout.

Good luck finding one. They sold out in a NY minute.

Reviews on YouTube say it’s decent and that you definitely get more than $10 worth but it isn’t very tough. Very thin blade with a hollow grind. Not something I’d carry as a backup when in the woods.

What was the old saying about a $10 helmet for a $10 head?
