i know this won't be easy... but i've got time to work it slowly into what i want... i've got an old file i may make a knife out of before i tackle this one... but i may just dive into it...

gotta love sketchup...
the lines on the iso view would demark the bevel lines... what do you think???

my thought is to drill the finger hole before i cut anything... then work out from there... it'll be a full tang most likely with stone scales... (i do some stonework in my spare time anyways and always wanted to use 1 particular slab i have for knife handles...) i'll do some filework on the thumb groove and file around the finger loop to keep it nice and thick... should make a good hunting/skinning knife... figure on some 1/4" plate to form the blade from... it'll be 10" long total length and about 2-2.5" wide at it's widest... just something to do some quick fieldwork out of... thought about shortening the blade a bit giving it a tighter curve to a more blunt point... but i kindof like the hybrid with the longer tighter point... the very tip will be very blunt and chiseled to keep the tip from chipping and it'll be double beveled... thanks for looking

That looks fun.
You can round out the choil with a drum sander or attachment. 1/4" is really thick, but if you're a mason used to lifting rocks you might not notice the weight. :)

I think it's fine, except the bevel angle will probably be too wide, and it won't make as good of a skinner/hunter.

Trey bringing it back up a little, and shortening the false edge.

I was going to ask what program you used to draw that but then I saw you used sketchup.

I can't say I care much for that long upswept curve, I guess it reminds me too much of a fantasy looking knife.

so work the bevel deeper into the knife??? make for a more shallow edge??? and the false edge being the top end of the blade???

looks like a great skinner! That tightly curved plunge looks great but will probably be quite a challenge to grind

yeah... figured on grinding up to that finger loop squarley then filing it out around the edge... there will be alot of sanding and it'll take a while to get it just the way i want it... i'm a bit of a perfectionest... my first experience with knifeworking was an old timer i bought from some kid about a year ago for $5.00... it was an old knife... but it looked like he had taken a dremel to it with a stone bit and just gouged the crud out of the blade... the entire blade... you couldn't even tell where the bevel ended... it took me a day or two to refinish the blade enough to make it a good pack knife... fortunately i have some stone working tool to sand and polish rocks... so i was able to wet sand the bevels with 2000 grit sand paper and then scotchbrite it and run it over a buffing wheel... unfortunately i didn't get a before pic... but after that i'd really like to make my own...

like this???

not sure if i like the top bevel bit...

Yea kinda like that. The top swegde may need to start a little closer to the tip but it looks good also on your shorter model posted, try bringing the tip down just a bit and adding a little more length back by the finger choil. It's your knife making the way you want it. We can give you opinions but its totally on you big dog. You must post pics of the finished product when your finished with it. I'm very interested to see how it turns out

I've made afew upswept skinners kinda like that.Don't care for the big hole at the back but it's yours....so.I used 1/8" and they are stout,5/32 would be the thickest I would use.Double the hieght of the main bevel and a slight swept swedge bout 1/2 the length of the blade.
Just my .02

so looking into buying a piece of steel to make this out of.... i don't see anything more than 1.5" wide... am i going to have to custom order something??? or weld it together???

Overall, I like the design. If it were me and I was going to use 1/8", I'd shrink it down a tway little bit, so my pattern would fit 1.5" steel. Just my 2 cents.

What steel are you looking to use?Aldo (NJsteelbaron) has wide widths, just give them a call.

ironically i have that knife... i have an anniversary edition of it that my dad bought for me... so i don't actually use it... at all... my idea was for a bit bigger version of it that's a bit more elk sized... lol... i figure on messing it up a couple times and transforming it into a different knife after i screw it up... (don't get me wrong i don't plan to fail... just be prepared if i do) if i can get it right i'll be making one for my dad and uncle later on... and as for steel i was just going down the list of suppliers on here and looking at what was available at what price...

looks like i'll be doing some business with the steel baron... though $50.00 is far from the 20 everyone keeps telling me to expect... lol... probably have to wait untill after the new year though... might have to build me a homemade belt sander in the meantime though... should be able to get the supplies to do that without costing me more than a couple bucks... wish i had more access to the CNC plaz's at work... could draw out and pre-cut all the pieces at work... lol... oh well.. have to just do it the old fashioned way... a torch and drill press... thanks for the tips guys... it may end up being a slow moving thread... but i'll check back in with progress...
