Pick one by tonight and until January 2015

Well I have never owned a stockman stainless from case but I did have another pattern and I do prefer the CV. It is way sharper and keeps to my taste a much better edge even after weeks of use. Maybe I just haven't got the sharpening right of the SS but it also felt toothy where the CV blades get sharp enough that I could probably shape my face after only half a dozen passes on a cup bottom.

The 63032 Stockman has the same main blade as the Small Texas Jack, and is one the same square-bolster serpentine frame. From what I can see in most pictures of actual knives, the 6318 in Pocket Worn Old Red Bone has the "normal" clip like on the Texas Jack, rather than the slim California clip on the other 6318s. However, that's a stainless steel pattern and you seem to prefer the CV.

Because without pictures things never really happened.. more comparison shots..

Case stockman. Better steel, more useful size, better looking covers, round bolsters.

Ditto. There is really no choice here. You get a sheepsfoot blade that covers 90% of your cutting duties and two others to cover the final 10%.
Plus I carried a case medium stockman as my only edc for a decade before stumbling across BF and sliding down the slipjoint rabbit hole.

Of the three, I'd also go with the Case Stockman.

Case med. stockman has it all for your needs, and the design is comfortable in the pocket AND the scales are of natural material.

Mike

If it's going to be a long-term commitment to just one knife, I'd go with the Case stockman. I think it will give you the most versatility.

Ditto here. The Case Stockman is def the best choice of the three.

If not that then the Peanut. Why? Cuz you're wife gave it to you as a gift so I assume it's sort of special in that regard and also cuz... Carl has performed amazing feats with his Peanut and lived to tell about it!

LOL no kidding! You have no idea how many more knives you "needed" until you got here! lol

I'd choose the Case stockman for no other reason then I like how it looks better than the other 2 choices.

The pics the OP just posted of the side by side comparisons are helpful. The stockman is no doubt bigger, but not THAT much bigger to rule it out. And it's far more capable for something beyond "light duty" use.

With the Peanut you'll be reaching for the Pioneer alot more often than with the Stockman (if the Pioneer is ever needed in that case).

The absolute biggest factor here is his office environment attire. Will his pants allow for the Stockman? Depending on how he wears them, the fit/cut, etc only he can determine this.

One more thing... What uses do you require of your pocket knife? Do you camp, hike, whittle? Is it used for food at all?

Joey is on to something there. All 3 knives cut stuff. The one you like the best should be the one you carry. For me, it would be the Buck. Its an aesthetics thing.

I tend to carry a Stockman a lost everyday anymore so that would be my vote, I don't really have a lot of trouble toting a med stockman in the pocket of a pair of scrubs so it should be fine in a pair of Dickies.

Case stockman. Bone and CV looks great, reasonable size, and useful blade selection. I work in an office slightly over half the time and carry a 4" stockman. Although probably larger than necessary, I've never felt that it was TOO big

I've owned one of those Case stockmans before, it had zero walk and talk and didn't feel real, what a piece of junk. Carry the Buck, no question.

So.. Overnight I have done a lot of soul searching (and a lot of sleeping too). I took in account what you all mentioned and suggested and here are my conclusions:

The Case Stockman had an overwhelming victory over any of the others, probably due to the prettiness of it. This pattern is very handy an can handle pretty much anything a large range of knives would be used for (whittling, food prep, office space cutting shores), but the extra 5/8th over 3 inches shows in how much weight it adds to the pocket. It is simple and nice to carry though, because of the round bolsters so its size is not a large downfall at all. However, I don't whittle often in my urban life.. I do sometimes while I am at home or on trips to the Nova Scotia region. Because of this and due to the fact that I carry a stainless Victorionx pioneer in a backpack all the time and have a spartan in my glovebox.. I have decided to limit my in-pocket carry to less than 3". This is a size of pocket knife that I can comfortably carry to meetings, offices, and even if spotted at inappropriate locations it won't depict me as a threat waiting to happen.

I find it very hard to leave that beautiful stockman in my knife box.. so it will be my designated whittling knife. It will be in a kit with a hook knife and a few other little helpful tools for that purpose probably resting most of the time on my desk at home (I still feel like it is a sin to leave it there though). It will come with me on trips to the country or camping overnight's though!

The little yeller peanut will be my main carry, with a few of its similar sized friends in the knifebox for "backups" or "give-aways". There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Buck knife but I just can't seem to get on board with the grind of the knife. Also the cutting edge of the largest blade is actually shorter than the cutting edge on the peanut making the less than 1/2 inch the only benefit to carrying that buck medium stockman.

So there it is.. a decision has been made and I move forward with a peanut, a Fenix E01 and a bunch of cards and cash in a rubberband all in my right front pocket with a hanky on my back pocket (Its winter and things can get messy sometimes).

I really appreciate the input from everyone to help me see the + and - 's of each one, it really helped me see what I wanted in perspective and more clearly. I did a more visual comparizon of the blade length of each blade in the stockman vs the peanut.. here is what I got from measuring the full cutting blade length (the base was the bottom of the page and the tip of each blade is marked)

I would hate to see the Buck knife put away permanently so if you are interested to use it shoot me a message and we can see how I can ship it to you in exchange for something that I could keep with the rest of my peanut buddies..

Here is a picture of what is in my knifebox for now on. The rest were sold or sent away to better homes for their use :) It feels nice to pass on the goodness of a good pocket knife.

PS: I am not sure if anyone has mentioned this one yet.. but Grohmann has these on Clearance and they look like great serpentine knives.

Great choice!!:thumbup::thumbup::thumb up:

I know it won't let you down in day to day life in a 21st century suburban existence.

Carl, Grand High Mucckba.

So the election was rigged from the outset! Which is usually the case with requests for advice. Most people already know what they want to do, they are just seeking external validation.

Well enjoy that little yeller 'nut! It should do well enough for you with that Pioneer in reserve.

If you are going to carry only one, why not go all out minimalism and go with the peanut. Good luck, I couldn't do it.

Well this was not necessarily an election but a request for advice. Each vote came to help validate the advice of each participating member. Some of the advice is more relevant to my situation than other. I wasn't looking for simple validations, I was genuinely asking for people to build a case towards why they would carry one over the other. From there (like in politics) I made a decision. The case supported by adjectives like "pretty" and "larger" don't resonate with me, so to me the cases of "gets the job done without hauling around something larger than my car key" applies very much to my case as like I said, I live in a place where a large blade could be seen threatening quickly and I want to carry this thing EVERYWHERE.

Thank you everyone for your input! It helps put things in perspective from many different ways.

Purely office carry? Then I'd say the Peanut. If you said, general always carry, then I'd have said the Case Stockman.

Add in the personal history and experiences you related I'd consider the fact that you use the Sheepsfoot 90% of the time and you really like the way Peanut carries and functions for you. Not to mention the sentimental attachment for the Peanut and you already have the pioneer accessible if truly needed. So even with the extras considered then I'd say the Peanut again.
