Pick one of these Spyderco knives and tell me why

I am thinking of buying another knife. I generally use a CRKT Desert Crusier for EDC. I love the grip in my hand. I also have a Mel Pardue Ambush (love the Axis lock) that is a hunting backup to my short Ka-Bar that I resharpened. There certainly are many to choose from that could make my list, but I was reading through the posts in the thread that asks for your list of knives.

I noticed very many posters favor Spyderco and I wondered of these three choices what would you favor as an EDC and why?

Endura
Manix2
Sage

The Manix 2 is easily one of my favourite knives. I use it as a work knife and as an EDC sometimes, and it performs just great in both roles (although it really seems to shine as a harder use knife).

I had an Endura 3, but sold it. Didn't fit my hand well, and the blade was a bit too long for my taste. Mine also had buckets of blade play in all directions (not sure whether or not that's a common problem with the design or whatever the case).

Can't chime in one way or another about the sage series - I don't have any of them and haven't tried any of them out yet.

I have all three. I'm a recently hooked Spydie fan. So, my opinion is that of a relative noob. But, FWIW...

I haven't carried my Endura much.

But, I really like the Manix 2 and the Sage series. I've got 4 Manix 2s and both of the current Sage models (1 & 2).

The Manix 2 is a very robust / beefy design. I really like the handles design, choils, and extra jimping. When I hold the Manix 2, it feels glued to my hand. It's not going astray no matter what. The ball-bearing lock is rock-solid and inspires confidence.

The Sage is more of a "gentleman's folder" than the Manix 2. I wouldn't say it's categorically a gentleman's folder (like the Kopas for example) in that it's certainly not a wimpy design. It's just more of that persuasion than the Manix 2. The Sage is a tough knife, too. But, it's just more elegant, I guess. One thing I like about the Sage is the wire clip which carries deep in the pocket. When I wear business attire during the work-week, I like the Sage.

On the weekends, I like the Manix 2 while wearing jeans.

There ya go... my noob opinion! :)

Sage 2 has some great ergos...more comfortable than the endura, don't have a manix o compare.

All good comments above.

Manix = real heavy-duty workhorse
Sage 1 (carbon fiber/linerlock) = very nice, elegant EDC
Sage 2 (titanium / framelock) makes you wonder why pay more for a small Sebenza
Endura = classic design, a good knife but I feel it has ergonomically been superseded by the lovely Stretch (which is in essence the same size).

I honestly think the Manix 2 is the best out of all 3. It feels more solid and smoother than the Endura and the Sage. Plus, it's made in the USA (if you care, I don't). Though the Sage has a better steel (S30V vs. 154CM). I guess it depends on what you want from your knife. Manix 2 for heavy duty, Sage for ease of carry and "gentlemanly" look.

i use an edc rotation and ill list them on order of preference.
all spyderco. i like the hole.

Gayle bradley, Sage 2, Stretch zdp, Endura4 ffg. and a couple others i give pocket time to are the manix 2, native and police 3 g-10.

i like them all for edc. they just carry well, good assortment of blade alloys. good grippy handles or ergonomics. i find after getting used to opening with a spydie hole a thumb stud seems backwards to me. i find it easier to use with gloves. i find the blade styles some other knives have to be too thick for good slicing, i cant stand a blade with recurve in it like so many do , see kershaw and zt whose recurve blades while look great are often very thick, hard to sharpen and dont cut well in allot of materials. every spyder i have cuts well, carves well and stabs well. or at least does 2 of those three well. i like them as allot do, they cater to the average joe, if you cant find a spyderco that fits your needs you just aint lookin very hard.

that said theres a couple BM and a ZT i might get at some point, i like the new hest folder that i intend to get when notified that they are in stock.. i plan on a Strider sng, hopefully within weeks. i have a esse 4 in desert on order along with a condor hudson bay.

today i have my stretch keeping me company.

Sage 1 is a great EDC in size, functionality and cool factor. The CF is as sweet as it gets!

I've got a couple Manix 2s and the Sage 2. I like the Sage for EDC because it takes up less room in the pocket and the clip allows it to sit lower. I'm also a framelock fan. The Sage is easier to clean with the flow through design, looks simple enough to take apart as well (although I have not yet taken mine apart). I plan on owning every variant of the Sage series, it's really the perfect size for my every day purposes.

Get both!

I own the original Manix 2 and the CTS-HXP SR version. IMHO, you cannot go wrong with the Manix 2. It feels great, looks cool and functions like all the top Spydercos do. Superb. Also, the jimping on the blade where you rest your thumb, is second to none on the Manix 2s.

I also own the Sage Ti. I bought that knife thinking it was "eh" kinda plain ( but wanted a "Spyderco Chris Reeve knife" anyway)... I actually expected it to be my least fave knife. As is stands, it's one of my all time favorite knives. I carry it everywhere. I clip it to my pillow case at night so it won't get lonely. Take it with me in the bathroom in case it has to relieve itself too. At times I flick the blade open and say, "Who's your daddy?". It's my BFF...... Hah! Just messin with you guys! Really I only said all that cuz I have it sitting on my monitor stand and it can see everything I'm typing. I don't want to make it angry.

No experience with the Endura. As far as the Sage or the Manix 2. Can't go wrong with either one.

Of those 3 I'd pick the Sage because it is small and light, and also elegant. The others are a bit big for my EDC needs, (Endura is long, Manix is wide) but then again everyone has different needs and wants.

OK, just how thick is the Manix2? I am used to the very thick CRKT Crusier that is .829 at the middle portion. I do like the fact that it has the rolling lock, and at least the steel is on par with the AUS 8 in the CRKT.

I have to wonder which is more important shape/ergonomics vs. type of steel?

Sage1 is my favorite of the three. It's more ergonomic than the Endura and lighter than the Manix. The wire clip alone is reason enough for me to choose it as the EDC of choice. Everything else about it like the amazing weaved carbon fiber, flawless fit and finish, perfect size and super smooth action are just icing on the cake.

To put the Sage's durability in perspective, the steel lined carbon fiber has to be stronger than the old non-lined Delica3 FRN and I abused one of those as a landscaper for over 6 years straight. If I'm not mistaken the blade may be thicker also. I don't see the Sages breaking under normal, heavy knife use. I've also dropped my Sage1 multiple times on concrete and tile without a mark to show for it. I did get a little blade etching on my user from some battery acid though. :)

I think I should include the Stretch as one of the choices. I agree about the ergonomics. There are no places around San Diego where I can handle them that I know about.

Endura
Manix 2
Sage
Stretch

Out of the original 3, I'd say Endura. I have never owned any, but this is mostly blade preference. A longer narrower profile blade is what I prefer. By narrower I mean from spine to edge, not blade thickness. Basically I like "stabby" knives. A nice thin wharncliffe, the Military blade, modified wharnie, Mora, etc...

Though you can't go wrong with all three choices.

Try and pick up a Manix 2 with a full flat grind blade. My Manix 2 is just a hair thinner than my Tenacious.

I have a Sage I, and it is a wonderful knife. Very light, yet palm filling. The S30V takes a wicked edge. It is like having a leaf-bladed scalpel in your pocket. The carbon fiber weave is still grippy enough to be practical, while looking classy as all get out. The fit and finish on my example could not possibly be any better. It is a fantastic knife, and in my pocket daily.

I would go with Manix 2, but the Sage 2 is a very nice knife if you want to spend that much. I vote the Manix over the Endura because it's just a little too long for my pocket.
