I was out-of-town on business yesterday and stopped at an Army/Navy store yesterday and found this vintage "French waterproof rucksack" for $19.99. I like the size, it holds two nagalenes in the side pockets perfectly, appears to be very water-resistant as back-packs go and a canvas/cotton panel where it rests on the back. Several different pockets on the front and the back .I see it as a good day-pack, when I want something larger than my Devil Dog, so I'm gonna try it out. I included a couple of my best friends in the pic for size reference (the Lone Ranger and my ever-present ATAX).

is it heavy, seems like some very serious rubberized fabric. how do you like the ATAX?

Alex,

The rucksack is very light, the material is not as heavy as some of the rubberized canvas that I've seen. When I bought it, I took it up to the counter and there were two more packs stuffed inside it (I thought it was filled with packing paper). Nope, its very light...

I love the Atax, it can be used a light axe when it is attached to a branch. It is a great little chopper/scraper (like an ulu), hammer, etc. It is one of the most comfortable knives to wear on a belt that I currently have, it rides high on a belt and can be worn driving etc.. A solid chunk of 1095! I did a brief review a while back if you want to google it..

Stretch,

I have an addiction... I wanted a German rucksack like the one in Longbow's avatar, finally found one, and thought it was a little larger than I needed. This French one is light and a pretty good compromise between a small shoulder bag and a ALICE-sized backpack.. Took it out this morning, pretty comfortable.

How much money did you have to surrender to buy it? :D:D

KIDDING!!!!

Disclaimer: to our French Forum members, I am just joking. I am an equal-opportunity lampoonist. Nobody from any group or nation escapes my lampooning.

Forcedstrike,

I didn't know that. I have taken it hiking twice now and I believe it is a pretty decent day pack. It is the right size and weight for me, water-resistant and pretty comfortable....

TTD,

The ATAX is probably not for everybody, but I like it a lot. It is one of those things that you wear and use and keeps growing on you...

 reason I never picked one up...I am on the fence....:D

Got a bunch of the German ones for my kids--$9.99 apiece via Sportsman's Guide. They are, admittedly, huge (the rucksacks, not the kids--I think each of my kids can actually fit into his or her rucksack at this stage)--but they are very sturdy, and at that price, I figured it'd give them something they can drag their clothes from van to house for a sleepover, or organize their stuff during a car trip. And,when they grow up, the packs should still be in fine shape, for use camping, etc.
