Picked up an Uncle Henry at a garage sale today, any info?

I am always amazed, yet at the same time not surprised at the level of knowledge here!

Can anyone tell me how old this thing is or did I miss it in a post above?

The sample date on the S Card is 6-79. So 1979-1981 is the best estimate.

And you can clean it with food grade mineral oil and a soft cloth. If the stains on the blades don't come clean that way, you can wash it in hot water with dish washing liquid, then oil after drying. You must dry it thoroughly because, as noted on the card, the springs will be 1095 carbon steel, not stainless.

Yep, looks like a Camillus-made Schrade.

I wouldn't read too much into the SSC stamp. Schrade was always mix-and-matching blades, frames, and handles between their various product lines. I've got a Primble with a Craftsman blade, I've got Uncle Henry knives with Old Timer blades, and I've got Old Timers with Schrade blades...

Have a close look guys- its Stag, theres grain in the Bark - Staglon doesnt weather or fade to look like that, my apologies if I am wrong, but my gut feeling screams Stag.

I thought I made a mistake once, but I was wrong. hehe. ... and you are wrong this time, my friend. It is is Dupont Delrin Staglon.

I'll try to get this thing cleaned up and get some better pix in the next couple of days. Unfortunately, the next few days are taken up by the kids' soccer and piano practices. No time for dad and his hobbies!!!

As per the Camillus S Card, it is Delrin Staglon. And yes since the Delrin covers are hot bath surface dyed, they can and do fade. The plastic, under certain circumstances, can surface degrade. Mostly from UV light and heat. I have acquired old knives which were uncommon and redyed the covers where years of sun exposure and handling had removed most of the dye. And "restored" surfaces which were dried and grainy due to UV light exposure and outgassing. Once cleaned, the appearance can be partially restored by oiling and lightly buffing the surface. Though it sounds like a material defect, it really isn't. Natural stag under the same circumstances degrades far worse.

Proof it is Staglon Delrin? Find a second example. perhaps on that auction site, and compare the texture and bumps. Once the mold was created, the bumps and valleys never varied. Or in the case of very long production runs such as with the 897UH, only slightly as new molds were made to replace broken or worn molds. I don't recommend the hot pin test, but if you did that, it would melt a spot of the Delrin, not smoke and smell like burning bone/hair.

It's too close to ANZAC Day to be bagging the Kiwis ..:p

In these pics are a few Staglon Schrades and a Remington-which does not have as good Staglon as the others IMO.
Check the difference each side of the 175 on the right of the pic-the difference between the sides is noticeable-one side is new looking the other is sun bleached and affected by time and dirt. It is Delrin which is the same material as Staglon.
Between the two large 885UH Stockmans one is used and weathered, one is fairly pristine.
Many here will know all this already but I thought it would be good to show anyway.
Also you can see "grain" in the staglon of the little "roadie" on the right hand side.
If anything it highlights how right they got it with faux antler Staglon.
Cheers.

I hear ya. We will still be here :D

Awesome Codger- Meako my friend I tip my hat to you Sir- I would have sworn it was Stag - I have owned many Staglon UH's and I would have sworn its Stag - so today is a good day if you learn something - not too sure what I learnt - apart from I was wrong :o

not wrong -simply misobservant:)
muphastas has had a hard life for sure. What I noticed was the similar appearance to my 175 "florist" -the surface of the delrin seems to have peeled of in small patches . Which is probably what would happen to any of us if we were left sitting in a toolbox or window shelf on one side for a few years covered in dust:thumbup:

PS has anyone noticed the golden rule that muphasta has transgressed in the photo?

gotta be about the blades being open or the paper towel...

Let me know what wrong I've done, so I can avoid any future wrongdoing...
